“People try to tell us, ‘Don’t think about it, try to stay away from it, it’s not going to do you any good,’” said one eleventh-grader. “But I think as the next generation, we can’t stand down and not do anything about it. This is our future we’re fighting for.”

Spotted on campus this morning. Thanks to the person who posted this.

“In Mr. Green’s case, he was not only challenging the president but also defying the entreaties of Democratic congressional leaders that members attend Mr. Trump’s speech and refrain from disruptions.” I’m glad Rep. Al Green of Texas stood up for us. Cowardice from powerful people is lethal.

BREAKING: We're sending an open letter to universities across the country, offering support and urging them to reject pressure to punish international students and faculty for exercising their First Amendment rights. Schools must hold firm against the Trump administration's censorship attempts.

"With the new tariffs, Texas could lose more than any other state: over 47 billion according to Axios. Economists are warning that a number of items imported from Mexico could immediately start to increase. These include cars, fruits, produce, liquor and electronics."

NEW: The axing of some 10,000 programs has consigned untold numbers of children and refugees to death, officials say. Documents and interviews reveal that the State Department appears to have made the cuts without the careful review it described in court. By Brett Murphy and @annamaria.bsky.social

Again, this was done to teachers. One of the first methods of anonymous harassment I spotted as a pattern when investigating what amounted to extremism within America’s school boards. Will likely write a newsletter on it soon, but here’s a reminder: www.propublica.org/article/geor...

My latest: "The more often we have experienced true helplessness, the more likely we are to feel powerless in situations where action is possible. And the more we freeze or flail in response to threats, the more deeply ingrained those responses become."

"The popular Jersey Kebab restaurant in Haddon Township was shuttered on Wednesday after federal immigration agents descended and took the middle-aged couple who own the business into custody." share.inquirer.com/bOqtIW [gift link]

just gonna be the thousandth person to remind you all that segregationists start the open bigotry with people they feel they can target most easily but do not end there

An absolute must watch (or must listen via your preferred podcast provider) interview with the inimitable Ruha Benjamin. Clear, concise analysis of the attacks on D.E.I. and higher education as a whole. youtu.be/1VRCfuKEGdo?...

Also Roberta Flack was of that generation of soul singers that were using their art politically. You don't find this in the soul music now. Like this deeply moving song where she critiques America's empty consumerism & militarism as she mourns a brother died in war for nothing but rich men.

NEWS: In USDA, multiple people have been asked to report the names of LGBTQ employee resource group leaders to higher-ranking officials, according to interviews with workers and a document reviewed by Mother Jones. + similar in the Department of the Interior

If your politics are focused on the actual sources of people's suffering, you will feel grounded and on purpose.

RIP, Roberta Flack. Rightfully known for “Killing Me Softly,” but folks… youtu.be/whGEMu8XqUU?...

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

This is an article that prefigures very accurately what we will be reading about American (and American based) scientists in about ten months. The collapse of the top scientific research network in the world. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

In modern history, what is the least popular that party leaders have ever been to their OWN voters? Second place was the GOP in 2009, where their net approval with Republican voters was only +6. Currently Dems are -8, shattering all previous records.

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.

i appreciate anyone who's trying in 2025

I always shock my students a bit when I tell them that quantitative data is just qualitative data that has already been interpreted numerically.

“That is why Trumpists are so focused on “ending DEI” in the federal workforce. They see anti-discrimination and inclusion as a ladder of upward mobility for people they do not believe should have one.”

If you missed tonight’s town hall with @naomiaklein.bsky.social, @chenjerai.bsky.social, @astra.bsky.social, and @keeanga.bsky.social on resisting the shock and awe politics of the far right and their billionaire enthusiasts, you can watch the video here:

NEW: The Trump admin is considering destroying 160 million COVID tests, worth half a billion dollars. This would be a horrible waste. COVID is still around, and causes high levels of illness and deaths throughout the year. Tests are expensive. The government should send them to people for free.

Not surprised that it's community colleges that are fighting back. Community colleges serve the greatest number of people facing systemic barriers. A large percentage of community college students are the first in their family to attend college.

"Whether we’re trying to create a giving circle or build relationships with our neighbors or organize an action or just gather some friends together for soup, we are all flush with how-tos and lists of actions and toolkits. None of these alone will flip the switch in us required to act."

This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement. The wholesale erasure of history in real time.

This is a useful (but day-ruining) post on the current situation (it’s a self-coup), including a list of likely outcomes (civil war is possible, but unlikely). Also, @liberalcurrents.com is clear-eyed and becoming part of my daily reading rotation. www.liberalcurrents.com/is-it-a-coup/
