The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) was established by Benjamin Franklin in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress appointed him as the first Postmaster General.

Serious question: if the president does not have authority to fire someone, why does it cause disruptions when he tries? Can they not just laugh and close the door?
It's like the National Parks. I think that you all enjoy broad bipartisan support. It makes financial sense to hire seasonal workers. The only reason they'd cut your staff is to privatize those lands & facilities. Ransack them for natural resources or turn them into luxury resorts.
There is no regular service schedule for equipment. First class mail is declining because service standards keep declining. People, in general, love their local post office. They simply don't understand that the federal government doesn't.
DeJoy's total compensation last year exceeded $500,000. A mail carrier w 40 years experience makes $75,000. No matter where they live. Dejoy spent the last 2 years canceling contracts with all 3rd parties except Amazon. The package processing centers are a wreck.
From what I've heard, in major Metropolitan areas, it's tough. I was stunned. You can look it up. Carrier's max salary after 25 years is $75,000. That's in West Bend, WI or Brooklyn, NY
The best thing about the USPS is that your mail (even your mailbox) is federally protected. It’s very very very hard for anyone to tamper with your mail other than US Postal Inspectors. Local police etc cannot touch it. You won’t have that protection with private companies.
Fun Fact: The B. Free Franklin Post Office in Philadelphia is the only Post Office that doesn’t fly an American flag… because there wasn’t an American flag when Franklin was appointed Post Master.
Nixon made it independent in the early 70s. Is Trump going to kill the whole thing, or just its independence? It needed reforms but I cant even imagine the US without the USPS. :(
The modern USPS, an independent agency, was officially created by the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970, signed into law by President Richard Nixon, transitioning it from the Post Office Department into a self-sustaining entity.
Now, the USPS is preparing to push back as Trump moves to dissolve its leadership and bring the independent agency under his administration’s control. America, this cannot be allowed—protecting the USPS is essential.
CONGRESS does not care. The people aren't going to care either until it's too late, because they are too dumb to realize that all this big government they hate makes their lives run. Everyone seems to think magical fairies also everything. It's such a typical male mindset.
I just sent an email to my Congressman asking him why he hasn't filed articles of impeachment over the violations of article I, section 9. Which are numerous. I pointed out he is now King and above the law. My Congressman is also my former Sheriff, so law enforcement. Dawdling doing nothing
USPS is semi-autonomous, has a union or 3, and was already on strike in 1970 when the PRA was passed to end that strike. Trump intends to violate or delete the PRA in order to put it into the Treasury. He's already violating the agreement. There are laws. But you can't obey in advance.
The Postal Workers should strike like 1970. If Trump does away with the Collective Bargining Agreement agreed to under the Postal Reform Act of 1970, the workers are no longer subject to the non strike clause of that Reform. Trump is stealing the Postal Pension Fund. Defend yourselves.
They will not be able to train scabs to do what is done in the sorting centers. Mail will pile up. E commerce will come to a halt. Even Amazon will have issues. Your jobs are complex. It takes a lot to get a letter or pkg from point a to b. It's not an easily fixable thing when it stops.
Didn't #Drumpf ruin the Old Post Office with that emollients Hotel, never properly audited per the government lease agreement. The contract signature was redacted so you couldn't prove who signed for it leaving him innocent of skipping yet another audit....
My small business relies on USPS! Other services cost too much and their locations are too far away in my rural area. The post office is right there in the village center.
GOP talking points include telling people over and over again how the USPS is "going broke". Of course, the Rethuglicans are "breaking" the USPS by design...

I run a small e-commerce biz and assure you that my product (shipping) prices will go up if I can no longer use the usps to deliver my orders. The usps has been doing a fantastic, reliable and afford job with small my small packages for years now. #fofa
I agree. They get crap BUT honestly they do a great job. I mail out small key chain like dolls and out of the hundreds that I have mailed out, I’ve only had ONE get lost. And personally I’ve only ever had ONE package to me not show up.
ETSY should get in on this cause a lot of sellers use USPS
“Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail shall keep the postmen from their appointed rounds.” According to Wikipedia, the original saying was spoken about 2500 years ago by the Greek historian, Herodotus. They never reckoned with the would-be king of America. Pitiful. Impeach now.
i have a cool idea.
what if everyone being fired simply said no and carried on like usual. after all, they have no legal authority to fire. so they're breaking no laws by refusing.
make them arrest em all. make them waste police resources.
They get locked out of their computers and access revoked so they literally can't. When people got fired last Friday, they sent the email at 7pm. President's day was Monday. So they found out about their firing because they could get into their computer on Tuesday. Can't even see the email
Nothing stopping them from peaceful civil disobedience. Sitting in their office spots and refusing to move. It wastes police time and resources to arrest them all.
Def like the sentiment of civil disobedience but for this instance Federal emoloyees have access cards that get deactivated when theyre fired so they wouldn't even be able to get to their office.
The USPS is one of the most important agencies around. It is literally full of 'DEI' people, from military veterans to LGBTQ, women and there's probably not a single country in the world which does not have someone from that country employed by the USPS.
Well, I'm sure my rep, Bill #Huizinga (MI-4) is solidly on board with our Dear Leader's plans whatever they may be as he always is. And to prove it, he uses taxpayer dollars to tell us every few weeks just how grand our Leader is and how evil Democrats are.
So? Do it anyway. You lose nothing by making a phone call. The GOP can stop this at any time; this is their mess and they need to hear our feedback, even if it doesn’t change their minds. We have voices and need to be using them.
What seems to be mostly missing in all this about the PO is the purpose: disenfranchising millions of people who vote by mail. Millions of them can ONLY vote by mail.
99% of Congress only pretends to care about the voters; they always obey the billionaires when it's time to actually vote.
What support do federal employees need to refuse illegal orders, like stonewalling info requests from members of Congress?
The only reason... https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5157303-congress-dems-concerns-ban-employees/
...to do this is avoid scrutiny while they do illegal actions, planning to disable the means of holding them accountable before they can do so, like Emperor Palpatine dissolving the Senate before using the Death Star.
Surely he hid the project to build it from the Senate leading up to that!
Elon wants to cut thousands of jobs under the USPS in retaliation for never receiving Christmas cards from his family who hates him and never sends him Christmas cards.
That’s been literally halted by numerous courts because it won’t succeed on the merits. It’s still a right. They have not gotten around it or ignored the courts.
1) Arizona uses paper ballots and allegedly the majority chose tRump for President, but in 2016 Russia accessed the election systems of all 50 states, specifically the voter rolls.
I thought it was just to target REP voters with disinformation, what if they made some DEM voters ineligible the day
DeJoy is the current postmaster appointed by tRump during his first term. DeJoy tried to slow down the processing of mail in ballots to due dates would be thrown out. DeJoy would veto or prevent the USPS from responding. Postal workers union a different matter.

Also going to their local office while they're on break. They won't be there but there staff will. A group of us will be going to our rep's local office - in addition to much of it being rural so will be hurt by losing the USPS he also represents two national park and surrounding areas.

I work for the usps. I'm scared beyond belief. I knew it was only a matter of time, but holy hell, I'm disabled and trans, I'm gonna be out a job if he takes over.
He wants to take control over USPS in order to be able to interfere with mail-in ballots for the next elections.
Musk has data of all citizens and he could divert mail-in ballots of those who oppose MAGA.
What would happen to VOTE-BY-MAIL? I think we know.
If the USPS (or anything) is privatized, it will be mean worse service, with higher costs for the consumer. Someone has rich has to get richer, ya know.
- Elimination of the Universal Service Obligation (USO): USPS is required to deliver mail everywhere in the US for the same price. A private entity would likely drop unprofitable routes or increase rates for rural customers. 🧵
- USPS employs over 639K people, many with strong union protections. A private PS would likely reduce staff, replace career positions with lower-paid roles, or weaken collective bargaining.
- Federal benefits like retirement, healthcare, & job security would likely be reduced or eliminated. 🧵
- Corporate Bailouts or Further Taxpayer Support: If USPS struggles to self-fund now, a private entity might ask for government subsidies anyway - which defeats the purpose of privatization.
As a small business owner who ships constantly I am HORRIFIED by this. The rotting mango hired Louis DeJoy to break the USPS..... why did that have to be his one competent hire?
Benjamin Franklin had a lot of impact on the foundations of our society, public schools, libraries, volunteer fire departments, he was a proponent of an educated middle class, which he viewed as critical to democracy, among many other things. We owe him a large thank you.
The US Postal Service is a Constitutional right. Too bad we can't go back to the days when it had postal banking services. But private banks killed that public service and wiped out all memory of it ever existing.
The combination of musk getting everyone's details and trump taking charge of Postal Services is that only maga will receive postal ballot papers, as putin says its not who gets the most votes that counts its who counts the votes that counts.
There is a big difference between making changes because they are inefficient or outdated and “doing things” in order to destroy and manipulate a system purely to your advantage.
I’m sincerely afraid the tipping point for the majority to realize this may come too late to undo the damage.
Trump owning the Post Office will control Passports necessary for married women (who changed name) in order to vote. This will suppress millions of voters who typically vote for Dems
They want that huge chunk of money from the mandated 75 years worth of retirement money. Billions of already paid for but they’ll claim they ‘saved’ it. Save the USPS! Signed a proud former postal engineer

My grandpa fought so hard to unionize the post office in NJ forever ago. He used to hold secret meetings in his basement. He continued to work for and fight for the post office employee's rights until he was in his 80s. I am so glad he isn't here anymore to see this happening, he would be crushed.
USPS was created as a national service, never as a business. If the USPS suddenly needs to be self-sustaining as all businesses are expected to be, will the same be applied for fire departments, for police departments. Big budgets there too no self-sustainability in sight. Where's that uproar?
USPS is one of the last institutions that truly looks out for people’s privacy and the common good. It’s a felony to open someone else’s mail, they don’t price gauge, they deliver life saving meds.. there is no way a USPS operating under our dear leader will operate with such good will
It’s a constitutional right with NO wording about profitability. That’s GOP bullshit. Clobbering USPS is a Trump wrecking ball, begun 1st term with appointment of DeJoy as postmaster general despite his conflicts of interest holdings in FedEx & UPS that will inherit all the business if USPS folds
With today's technology, the USPS should be highly efficient in delivering mail, an essential service for the American people. What is needed is a qualified and capable Post Master General.
Trump is a functional illiterate and has no use for the mail outside of credit card offers to get more money from banks he has no intention of paying back
No it was established by a mention in the constitution directing that a post office be offered by constitutional provision. He'd need a 66% vote to change that and they will never get that.
It's amazing to me that anyone is still clinging to, "but congress would have to..." or "but that's illegal..." or "it can't happen, because the constitution says..." when we're talking about a dude who is blatantly tossing law out the window and breaking it with no repercussions.
...and softened up by DeJoy so it could be completely destroyed by POTUS Elon Trump so it could be sold off and privitized. They are going to do the same to the National Park Service.
I urge people in every US town and city to gather in front of their local post office, thereby creating a huge and spontaneous national protest that the news couldn’t ignore. It could be the spark that ignites the fucking colossal street demonstrations you’ll need if you want to save your country.
The United States Postal Service is established by the Postal Clause in Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the Constitution, which grants Congress the power "to establish Post Offices and post Roads." This clause was included to facilitate communication and commerce across the states . . .
To insure that information travel freely throughout the then colonies

All of your posts are depressingly right on correct.
Now I see why Dejoy stepped down. Say goodbye to fair mail in ballots, once again mail boxes will be ripped up overnight and mail sorting machines will break down for Democrat votes. Only voting centers next election.
Not only would the USPS be privatized and Bezos, UPS and FedEx and that awful DHL, would deliver our mail and packages. That pension fund that Bush forced them to fund beyond their living employees must be worth billions by now. Who wants that? 🤔
That's part of the issue. The big shippers don't want to have the hassle and cost of going to a lot of the rural addresses. So they will take a package in, get it partially through the process, then transfer for final delivery.
Certain institutions hold us together as a nation & a society. Sadly, "society" is considered evil to the lunatics who are currently destroying our institutions so they can sell them off for parts to their cronies.
If you want an example, read up on the past 30 years of Russian history.
"Crack in the Edge of The Earth" by Nathaniel Philbrook contains a fantastic account of the heroic deeds performed by the P.O. after the S.F. Earthquake and fire. I used to get daily kudos on our P.O. from all over the world. Everyone was envious of it and it beat the snot outta UPS.
Not anymore.
Remember when he said or bragged really that he could shoot someone in fifth Avenue and he’d be free still. It looks like he was correct. Nobody is really lifting a finger to stop him. We have no opposition leader.
We the People must be the opposition. We cannot wait. Keep pushing Congress (as futile as it seems), and keep protesting. The People cannot ignore the crashing airplanes, the spreading diseases, and the lack of medication by mail in rural (red) areas.
these ill-behaved adults posing as wannabe dictators now hurting other people through their actions need to be punished like a badly behaved child in a traditional catholic school
that 34-count convicted felon wants to resurrect the long dead Ben Franklin so he can be murdered in the 21st century.
Congress has been emasculated by that drug-addled south african nazi who paid to keep the felon out of prison.
And the USPS made a profit up until a political ploy (2006 or 08?) made the PO have 75 years of pension set aside! The billionaires want to drive the post office into debt, and cry loss, so they can get their hands on the money maker and privatize them. Grrrrr.
He's a psychopathic egomaniac. He's likely got someone concocting drawings of them now and working on getting them done. I put nothing past the son of a bitch at this point.
He made the Covid checks all about him ultimately with that fucking "I did this for you" included bit. He'll get his tiny thumbprint all over USPS if he does this. I'm betting the asshole renames it "TrumpMail" or something equally as vomit-inducing.
Okay, seriously, though. This is a screaming opportunity for people to dress as Ben Franklin and protest the shit out of this. That would get media attention even in this circus. Go on and on how it is an American institution, and it can not be put in Chumps hands. Every city. Shit I'm in AK, I will
"I believe, further, that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other.” Benjamin Franklin
Damn, feeling conflicted. My grandpa was an amazing, hardworking postal delivery worker. But the post office where I currently live has corruption and toxic work environment issues. But, ultimately, I don't want to see the service end. Or for people to lose jobs like this.
I agree. My husband works there. The lack of integrity w/ management and supers is astounding. Along w/ the nepotism. They need to clean house but that’s a/b it. The post office is still cheaper than FedEx and UPS. They deliver where the competition won’t because they are a service to Americans.
Dejoy was installed in the position by tRump's Criminal Regime 1 to attack it from within. Everything he did was done to waste funds, go against progress, and cripple the USPS.
Last week he wanted the USPS to collect tariffs from individual customers for every package from China. Something they don't even have the infrastructure for & would cost more to collect on low value packages than we're collected.
He's so incompetent and doesn't understand how anything works. He wants to implement his stupid agenda but also get ridcof all the agencies needed to implement his agenda, it makes no sense.
Now trump is eating it. Let's watch him transition *this* to the Commerce Department. It's not meant to operate for profit, it's meant to service this broad & populous Nation.
I have had chicks mailed to me in the spring time. The post office was reliable and 100% of the chicks arrived alive.
I fear this year may be different.
Y&R. I worked for Grey then a small upstart agency 1980-81. Same building as the “I’m a woman; bring home the bacon & cook it myself “ agency. The crazy period when middle aged white guys had no F’ing idea how to market to professional & upcoming women.
I remember the series of postage stamps from that time that featured postal workers on the front and a description of their job on the back of the stamp the first ever stamps with text on the glued side. Stamps are cool collect them.
The USPS is established under Art. I, Sec. 8 of the Constitution, and it’s the responsibility of Congress to ensure funding for the postal service. The intent of Trump and DeJoy was privatizing said services. Trump thinks he’ll be able to do that with another EO. The Constitution says otherwise.
Did he not do that his last time? Gave the UPSP to Louie the Loser who tossed billions of dollars worth of equipment into the dumpster and made delivery service worse than ever.
It's already too late to stop this from happening. it was too late 8 years ago & it was too late 40 years ago when Reagan got rid of all those regulations and rules.
They are hell bent on world domination, these 3 here and the other 2, xi and un will take over the far east.
Our founding fathers must be turning in their graves with this asshole destroying everything they worked so hard to build!!! when is orange felon’s karma going to catch up to him?!? He’s been a fraud his whole life, he’s cheated, lied, abused, raped and stolen and he’s still just there, existing…
Benjamin Franklin founded the USPS to connect a fledgling nation—centuries later, it might only take one term to stamp "Return to Sender" on democracy. - all thanks to the f-ing GOP
Check the Postal Clause, Article I section 8.
The Post Office Act of 1792 made the Postal Service a permanent fixture of the Federal Government.
The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 created an independent agency to manage the United States Postal System.
This will crush rural areas where over 60% of post offices are located and many areas not served by private delivery companies. USPS is good jobs for rural folks. These job losses will be another hit for rural communities which vote primarily red.
Even small government Jeffersonians know that he believed the fundamental reasons for the establishment of a federal government was to protect our borders and DELIVER THE MAIL.
