One of the most insidious arguments about renewable energy is that it is expensive because "it needs backup". This post from Electrotech Revolution explains in detail how adding renewable power to the grid *saves* money. open.substack.com/pub/electrot...

“We now expect a 3°C world,” Morgan Stanley analysts wrote earlier this month. They predicted this would be good for air conditioning stocks. Something it would not be good for? Life on Earth. www.eenews.net/articles/big...

If someone says an entire field is “canceling” them, they’re most likely just a bullshit artist. Real scientists convince experts with evidence.

Hannah Ritchie is one of the few people who does the back-of-envelope calculations needed to provide context for numbers in the news. Doing such back-of-envelope calculations is a skill all of us should develop. www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/whale-carb... @hannahritchie.bsky.social

Y’all wanna know what it really says in the Kennedy Papers? It says… … THE WORLD HAS WARMED BY 1.14°C SINCE KENNEDY’s ASSASSINATION THANKS MOSLTY TO THE COMBUSTION OF FOSSIL FUELS AND THE RATE OF WARMING IS ACCELERATING!!!

The new WMO State of the Climate report has a section by Gavin Schmidt and me on attributing exceptional 2023 and 2024 warmth. We find that while 2024 can be well explained by changes in forcings and internal variability, 2023 remains more of a mystery:

The people who produce this Mauna Loa atmospheric CO₂ record have a lab in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, about 50 miles (80 km) from the observatory. By closing the lab, it'll be really difficult to maintain the CO₂ observations.

The Criminal-Trump administration just revoked federal grants for EV charging stations across the US, aimed at promoting vehicles using fossil fuels. The only person who benefits from this is Elon Musk who has a Tesla network of charging stations, now available to other cars — for a fee.

Beautiful deal The free to read (tks!) paper explains how vast quantities of data show what lies under my old Nat. Geographic map 🔽. And why the Peninsula, Pine Island, Thwaites, most of W.A.'s glaciers & ice shelves loose mass while E.A.'s gain "modest amounts" - www.youtube.com/embed/6PLBEz....

Grazie @stefanocavok.bsky.social , fa piacere che le lezioni siano apprezzate.

It is about freedom of speach and fremdom of research in Europe. Europe must not join the spirit and action of intimidation currently prevailing in the USA.

The idea that the countries of the Global South will be capable of recycling materials that rich countries dump on them is unrealistic.

One of the people fired from NOAA today is the director of the Ocean Acidification Program. That program also leads the U.S. government's effort on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The destruction of American science is incomprehensible.

This is a cool paper. Even if you don't work on ocean dynamics or the Southern Ocean, check out the great figures. 🌊🧪

Has your science ever been twisted, misrepresented, or taken wildly out of context? My latest Eos article dives into how I navigated this whirlwind—and what it taught me. Check it out (published this morning)!

Defund SpaceX. Yhe space program should be under NASA, not a billionaire.

Donald Trump hallucinating and babbling complete nonsense at the National Prayer Breakfast. There is zero water coming from Canada to California, and nothing he's said or done changes that. He's "opened up" nothing. He must think because Canada is north of the US that it's "uphill."

something big brother, something Orwell. But Musk is watching you is just so stupid and sad and vindictive. Not even a decent dystopia.

I think this is my favourite report cover of all time. Any others?

today, i am giving a seminar at EPA on a paper titled "Efficiency, equity, and cost-recovery tradeoffs in municipal water pricing" and it has apparently been scrubbed from the seminar website (it was listed on here last week!). I used a bad word in my title, I guess. www.epa.gov/environmenta...

New via NYT — The CIA sent the White House an unclassified email listing all employees hired by the spy agency over the last two years to comply with an executive order to shrink the federal work force. One former agency officer called the reporting of names a “counterintelligence disaster.”

Agency after agency is being ransacked by 20-something Muskovites at DOGE. Trump Admin threatens to lay off 1/4 to 1/2 of employees at the National Science Foundation. Cutting staff at the $10b/year grantmaking agency would “gut the intellectual center of U.S. leadership in science and technology."

An acre of land can power a car to go 13,000 miles per year using biofuel (corn ethanol), or 900,000 miles per year using solar.

Small emission sources in aggregate disproportionately account for a large majority of total methane emissions from the US oil and gas sector

Longer-term perspective on the rise of US oligarchy

I wrote about Musk and this bureaucratic coup as plainly as I could. There's reporting in here & the particulars are overwhelming but what's happening is so clear: He's not trying to run the federal govt like a software company He's trying to turn it into a political weapon. (gift link)
