One of the questions after my talk today was about scientists refusing to buck the administration because they fear losing their jobs. I said that a lot of self-styled apolitical scientists lost their jobs this week, so silence will not save them. Respond and keep your values and dignity.

Make no mistake. This is an all-out attack on health in America. Not only is the EIS vital to controlling infectious disease; it was where a remarkably high fraction of our public health leaders received formative training and experience. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

Many of you started following me a few weeks ago when I shared my experiences of getting kicked out of an NIH workshop. I’ve now shared those experiences and their potential long term effects in an OpEd published this week in the Akron Beacon Journal. You can read it here:

Good news. My new picture book comes out in October. Spark: Jim West’s Electrifying Adventures in Creating the Microphone by Ainissa Ramirez, illus. by Setor Fiadzigbey, launching the Black Innovators series. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

I've had the chance to interview researcher Rachel Hardeman a number of times for stories (including today) She's not on here yet but I wanted to share an op-ed she wrote. www.startribune.com/with-science...

I have run out of patience with the apparent silence of most US science institutions (and not just US) in the face of Trump & Musk's rampage. There are of so many facets of that, but in this column for @chemistryworld.com I talk about the assaults on inclusion. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/scie...

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the nation’s largest private funder of biomedical research, this week abruptly ended a $60 million program aimed at improving the retention of a diverse student body in undergraduate science and engineering programs.

Reminder that many LGBTQReads rec posts also list upcoming titles, if that was something you wanted to keep in mind during this last day of the preorder sale. Like this one: lgbtqreads.com/2025/02/03/h...

In light of this deeply illegal activity at NSF and the ongoing attack on American science, I'm posting the slides from my 2017 talk at the American Physical Society about the Nazi take over of German physics/why German is no longer science's lingua franca 🧪 🧵 1/26 drive.google.com/file/d/1_MCm...

What is structural racism, and how do we measure it? @tyson-brown.bsky.social, @pahoman.bsky.social, and I have a forthcoming Annual Review article on @socarxiv.bsky.social. Check it before studying structural racism is banned (and follow Tyson and Trish, new to Bluesky). osf.io/6zbgh/

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

This phone bank (3p ET) is still on with good reason! Research is stalled, the NIH comms blackout and hiring freeze are ongoing, and we need to protect research in the future. Also, Trump's press secretary is sending mixed-messages about the memo rescinding the pause. www.msn.com/en-us/news/p...

Ecology/animal sciences folks should listen to @weouthere.bsky.social. I'm listening to the one with Hassan Bayyan and the inequality of volunteer/low paying jobs in science fields really shines in this episode. Short 🧵 creators.spotify.com/pod/show/weo...

Since my kids have grown, I read a LOT. This year was no different. I read fiction, non-fiction and in particular, science themed non-fiction in form of physical books, ebooks & audiobooks. Allow me to share my "read" list for 🧪📚 in 2024: 83 science themed books, 36 written by women. 🧵

Post your favorite photo that you took in 2024

Scientists! We are trying to get 1000 of us into the volunteer database by Jan 1. You'll be volunteering to speak with classrooms over video chat about your work, and answer their questions! You can volunteer for up to 5 sessions per semester. Sign up here! www.skypeascientist.com/sign-up.html

“On the Swamp” by @waterpotential.bsky.social was published by @uncpress.bsky.social this year and is an excellent read.

There’s no sugarcoating it: The 2024 election was terrible news for science, the environment, and the role of expertise and evidence in public policymaking. By learning from past experiences, we can try to minimize the damage. @whysharksmatter.bsky.social therevelator.org/scientists-m...

"Yes, we’ve all gotten much better at “saying no,” but as the volume of requests increases, as the whole system becomes more and more precarious and dependent upon volunteerism (and a shrinking pool of volunteers, at that!), the cognitive load increases." 👇

Chenjerai is an officer of the American Association of University Professors, and honestly all members and all academics should take this as a threat to us collectively

Absolutely upside down stuff: a Peabody award winning professor who teaches media non-fiction storytelling about *checks notes* police, inequality, and power is “persona non grata” on the campus where he is employed for that expertise? for documenting the thing he is known for covering?

Folks, this is not to scold anyone (not my style) but instead to encourage usage of alt-text in your images. Below thread are some *guidelines* for SciComm images. I'm more likely to re-post your image if it has alt-text, or at least a link to further context (like a paper). Hope this helps!

I have 214.6K followers, and I figure at least some of them are looking to gift books this holiday season, so: HEY AUTHORS OF BLUESKY: In the comments to this post, tell us (briefly!) about your most recent book, and put in a link to where people can learn more and/or buy the book in question. Go!
