Greenland is Inuit land. They do not "belong to Denmark" No, they shouldn't be acquired by the US. No, they shouldn't be renamed "Red, White, and Blueland" (corny) No they shouldn't "join Canada instead" A free Kalaallit Nunaat is one that belongs to no settler colonial nation.

Likewise in my conversations with Indigenous/Native American elders. They are only surprised that so many people seem stunned by this turn of events, with the settler colonial state of USA essentially regressing to the mean of what they have experienced over 500 years.

Two closely related undescribed parasitoid wasps from different galls on the same host plant

Today was the first day since the inauguration that I was able to get any writing done 🙃

I work with the Monarch team and highly recommend them to any entomologists that are interested in transitioning to industry. They are doing fascinating research and are poised to develop some awesome technology.

Quitting science to open up a hot dog stand gets more appealing every day 🌭

'Helicopter research' and 'parachute research' are often conflated in the literature but they're meant to describe different types of inequity in research practice. Addressing one does not always remove the other. 1/5

Caracara Tuesday continues… this doesn’t translate on a small screen but it’s nearly uncropped using my Z8. 🪶☀️🌵

My new editor interview for @theplantjournal.bsky.social I share thoughts on cell surface receptors, finding exciting research topics, setting priorities in the early career, and the dreaded "work-life balance" topic :) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

The #Eurytomidae UCE phylogeny that I've been working on in the past few years is now out as a preprint. By using museum samples at NMNH and CIRAD, we generated the first global phylogeny of this diverse but poorly studied #Chalcidoidea family. 🧪 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

In children per year, the US birth rate is at an all-time low, but in Miles’ per hour it’s at an all time high.

My passion for science was ignited through the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation & Ronald E. McNair programs which helped me view culture and identity as an asset to my scholarship. I went from a community college student to today an Ivy League professor because of these programs.

Staying on the sunrise theme, here is a beautiful one at Reynisfjara featuring the Reynisdrangar stacks. It was taken in Nov 2020 when I quarantined for 5 days at a cabin near the beach, with no-one else around! Very different from these days (it's an exceptionally busy place). #Iceland

I am suddenly very concerned about flying back to the US in a few weeks 😬

Out: Donner Party In: Döner Party

It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

If I react a bit too strongly or big to a slight, it might be becuz my students, career, values of research-based equity solutions, & our communities (professional/personal) are under a directed attack. Will the collective come together to push back? I see a lot of heads done & I got mine so far.

I had this happen to one of my papers once. I paid the (>$3k) OA fee and they put it behind a paywall anyway. An angry email to the editor got things fixed, but still...wtf?!

In case it's not obvious to anyone: the end goal of anti-DEI campaign is to re-segregate the workplace, where meritocracy is weaponized to preferentially place cis white male at high-paying positions.

As if being a postdoc isn't hard enough, truly feeling for the PRFB fellows and anybody else relying on gov research money right now. Also wild how most people have no idea what's going on. Tell your friends!

The researchers compiled PRR and NLR genes from 808 angiosperms living in habitats with low pathogen burdens. They observe a contraction in NLRs and PRRs. They also established the Angiosperm Immune Receptor Database (AirDB) to serve the plant R gene community. Thanks!

The consequences of polyploidy are... well, complicated. A deep dive into polyploidy in a massively successful tribe of grasses. A masterpiece led by Michelle Stitzer, representing the work of a lot of folks on the PanAnd project over last 7 years. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Considering submitting this for Audubon’s photography contest under the birds in landscapes category but I shot this in portrait 😆 😭

While I agree with this overall, I think it's important to also note that many people who want an academic career are unable to make it work for a variety of reasons. It sucks to abandon your chosen career path - especially after years of training - due to circumstances outside your control.

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this. Smashed records. Curtesy of Garrett Roberts.

If there's a worldwide shortage why does every job opening get tons of applicants?

I walked the Cave Spring Trail every weekend for over a year when I lived in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. During that time, I had the privilege of documenting the development of many #galls. Here's one of my favorites. Details in alt text. #nationalpark #entomology #utah

This is absolutely devastating for US science. The PRFB launched my career and the careers of many of my friends/collaborators. Many of us wouldn't be where we are without it. Also, how the hell am I going to fund my lab as a #newPI now?
