Spending isn't a “conspiracy” just because Musk doesn’t know how to read usaspending.gov. A program isn't waste just because it doesn’t help the richest man in the world. It isn't fraud just because he doesn’t like it. A law is not illegal just because he disagrees with it.

😡 F'ing ridiculous. After updating its FAQ yesterday, NSF refused to directly answer a simple question: "Will the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) continue to award fellowships in 2025?" GRFPs are a lifeline that support 2,000+ graduate students/year. www.nsf.gov/executive-or...

"It is absurd to mindlessly decimate the workforce that has led the world in science over the past 75 years, and to willingly give up excellent scientists and talent," Beyer wrote. www.reuters.com/world/us/us-...

THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center say results of a Phase I trial of an mRNA vaccine aimed at preventing pancreatic cancer show promise. The vaccine PREVENTED the cancer from coming back in patients who had already received treatment for MORE THAN three years. 🧪🧵⬇️

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes? Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce. Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

1. Help: NIH study sections and council meetings not already published in the Federal Register as of Jan. 21 have not been allowed to meet (thetransmitter.org/funding/fede...). This appears to be an 'end run' around a recent injunction and came from HHS officials. You can help (see below):

The federal register issue seems clear and actionable. Call your reps about the issue to see if they can intervene or apply pressure in any way.

Are you a grad student attending #Evol2025, virtually or in person? Submit your talk for the SSE Hamilton Award! Finalists will present during the virtual portion of the meeting on May 29-30. Apply during registration by April 15! https://buff.ly/3QI1ZJj @evolmtg.bsky.social

"the concept of a teach-in — wherein a panel of college professors or experts on a subject hold a discussion around a relevant social or political issue — originated in the University in 1965 to protest the war in Vietnam."

Different divisions were impacted differently across NSF. DEB lost 5 out of 12 permanent program directors yesterday, across all four clusters. The very best human beings. Grateful to have worked with them and become friends with them.

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist. And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation. A 🧵:

I was hoping that my first bsky post would be more cheerful. I recently joined NIH (NIEHS) as a PO. I fought hard for this position and was so excited to support health science from a new vantage point… I picked up my life and moved to NC. Unfortunately, my time at NIEHS was short lived.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

Registration for Evolution 2025 is now open! Come join us virtually from May 29-30, and/or in-person in Athens, GA from June 20-24. @sse-evolution.bsky.social @systbiol.bsky.social @asn-amnat.bsky.social #Evol2025 www.evolutionmeetings.org/registration...

Letter from the SSE/SSB/ASN councils on the scientific understanding of sex and gender, pls RT

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

Cutting the National Science Foundation in half will undermine American leadership in science & innovation. Long-form take on the long-term consequences: open.substack.com/pub/joshuasw...

For all my scientist friends wondering if you are going to get a grant termination letter from NSF and what to do if you do it.

Hi, scientists. You're seeing what we all are: USAID illegally blown up, 20 yr olds dumping code into the Treasury's seven-trillion-dollar payment system, Senators and House members joining protests at Treasury today... It's a lot. It's a national crisis. What should you do now? 🧵 🧪 1/x

This is a great thread about how students in research are impacted.

Focusing on the small wins: first data points from this semester’s CURE course! Students are using a PCR assay to ID male sawflies collected on different pines. This is a perfect gel- all positive controls had bands, neg control didn’t, and all 4 unknowns worked. Yay! (W/ @jakebnwatts.bsky.social)

If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me. Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.

Applications for the next round of Graduate Student Research Awards (GSRAs) are now being accepted! More info here: systbio.org/graduate-stu... Apply here: app.smarterselect.com/programs/985... Deadline is Feb 28, 2025 by 17:00 PM US EST.

Also just a great reminder to donate to this amazing cause!!! I just set mine for automatic monthly- you can too!!!

If you know anyone who might be interested in working as a technician before a PhD, I'm looking for someone to work with me to generate some amazing data to understand the genetics of behavior, sex differences, and reproduction in an evolutionary context. Bonus? Amazing and supportive department!

We have an open-rank faculty position in #aging at the HNRCA at Tufts University in Boston. The Center is seeking a researcher who works on racial/ethnic health disparities in aging, as part of a #clusterhire focused on #healthequity. Interested? See apply.interfolio.com/160747 #publichealth #AIML

The Plant-Herbivore Interaction GRC is Feb. 9. Our USDA conference proposal was positively reviewed but won't be funded (at least now) along with ANY others bc of budget freeze! Please consider donating (tax-deductible) so we can still bring in as many folks as possible: my.grc.org/p/contributi...

Excited to report that Joy Bergelson (bergelsonlab.org) and I will be running a brand new GRC conference on the Function of Evolving Systems in the summer of 2026. The 2028 one will be chaired by Mikhail Tikhonov (physics.wustl.edu/people/mikha...) and @asanchezlab.bsky.social! Stay tuned!

Grades submitted! 🎉🎉🎉

Late-breaking job ad: The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA) is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Plant Evolutionary Biology!!! More details below. Please repost!

Are you an evolution educator? Consider applying for the T. H. Huxley Award, which recognizes and promotes outstanding evolution education resources. The recipient receives funding to present their resource at the Evolution or NABT meeting! Deadline February 3. http://bit.ly/2kP2pPM

Which sequencing centers are folks liking these days in terms of cost, data quality, and turnaround time? We need library prep + sequencing for both WGS and RNAseq experiments. Currently gathering quotes and wondering if we’re missing any gems.

Nominations due TODAY for the 2025 Dobzhansky Prize! This award recognizes the accomplishments and future promise of an outstanding early-career evolutionary biologist. Submit your nomination now! https://buff.ly/4fNJk9k

Just posting this to #popgen Here's a link to my notes on population & quantitative genetics: github.com/cooplab/popg... Hoping to extend it more after the winter holidays, as I'm just finishing up teaching the undergrad version of class.

Huge congrats to Dr. Ashleigh Glover, who successfully defended her PhD today!
