This is a stunning betrayal by Whitman Walker in DC. You CANNOT jettison the trans community to protect yourself. It’s shameful. I got my name changed at WWH. I have promoted their research. Now they are capitulating to save gay people at trans people’s expense by trying to erase us.

We need our local institutions to help sustain us during these dark times. Love to see this note from our local bookshop (aka my home away from home). Buy local. Fuck the other guys.

This was what many of us had suspected would happen. I guess that means US scientists who would like to be authors of the next 7th assessment working group reports (WGI-III) will have to find alternative affiliations to make sure their applications can be considered.

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

If "recycling" requires a constant stream of virgin plastic products, then what's the point? My cover story for @gristnews.bsky.social is about the problem of "downcycling," whereby used materials get downgraded into lower-quality products that can't themselves be recycled. grist.org/accountabili...

Plastics are a transboundary issue. That's why we need global solutions — like a #PlasticsTreaty.

🛑 Observers struggled to follow #PlasticsTreaty talks in Busan due to closed-door meetings. 📨 We sent an open letter urging the INC Bureau to uphold observer rights and boost transparency. 👇

Here's another plastics policy/science starter pack from @tangri0.bsky.social to add to the mix.

WATCH: The Nicaraguans who keep Wisconsin’s dairy farms, restaurants and factories working are sending home their most prized possessions, bracing for potential mass deportations. “We don’t have much, but what we do have is important.” 📽️: @josesepulveda.bsky.social

Apropos of nothing, microplastics are found in apex predators, including sharks. No living creature is immune to microplastic exposure. The only way forward is to reduce plastic production and consumption. #PlasticsTreaty #BeatPlasticPollution Study: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Today, the Scientists' Coalition for an Effective Plastics Treaty sent an open letter to the #INC Bureau, stressing the crucial importance of science and observer participation in the negotiation process for a global #PlasticsTreaty, which was minimal during #INC4 and #INC5. #Plastics @unep.org

The Trump/Musk administration is considering repurposing USAID to foster fossil-fuel development in Africa and the Global South. (They are, truly, agents of death.) subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene...

If you are a federal employee working on climate, weather forecasting, satellites, ocean obs etc. I am at @afreedmanclimate.03 on Signal and would like to hear from you.

I just got my explanation of benefits: $29,369.58. That's $28,086 + $39 for the drugs. $1,244 for medical oncology. According to ICER, this drug had the second-highest net sales revenue in 2023. (absurd IMHO) Maryland #HB424 and #SB357 are *essential* steps to stop pharma profiteering.

A PSA to federal employees working on climate and environmental science/policy If you're witnessing political and/or industry interference in your work now that Big Oil has effectively captured the government, you don't have to let it slide. Contact me securely: heated.world/p/a-tipline-...

It's going to be a wild ride in the world of US plastic policy next week. Buckle up, friends.

I have a condition that causes me to have seizures and this is genuinely one of my worst fears.

We @propublica.org are tracking who is working with Elon Musk and what they are doing. We have 20+ names so far including some that haven't yet been reported. Help us investigate and send us tips 🔎: www.propublica.org/tips/federal... projects.propublica.org/elon-musk-do...

a bunch of outlets totally wiped out their environmental and climate desks in 2011 after cap-and-trade legislation failed. this cycle of layoffs is more existential — the news business is failing — but it's also the same short-sightedness and cowering to power.

I'm checking in from the land of negotiating the #PlasticsTreaty to see this message from @enb.iisd.org and feeling a bit like Bill Murray.

By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

"Climate change, white nationalism, erosion of democracy — they’re all part of the same story. They all remind us that this is not how democracy is supposed to work," writes @sammyroth.bsky.social: www.latimes.com/environment/...

When I asked EPA if, as of today, they had made grant money available to grant recipients, including allowing them access to ASAP portals, I was referred to the DOJ about ASAP specifically. DOJ then declined to comment; the story has been updated to reflect this: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Tomorrow in DC we’re protesting DC Children’s Hospital for ending all care to trans people under 19 I would love to see my followers join me in protesting a move that’s already impacting folks very close to me If not now, when?

An urgent message from the nation's health journalists:

NEW: In response to orders by the Trump admin, the CDC has taken down the Household Pulse Survey, one of the biggest and most important sources of Long COVID data in the world. The US government is literally erasing the existence of Long COVID.

Today, I’m starting a new treatment for Crohn’s—it’s a drug that wasn’t available when I was diagnosed 15 years ago—and I’m eternally grateful for it. I hope I’ll start to feel better soon. But it’s terrifying to start a new medication with an administration that’s trying to dismantle the system.
