@schmidtocean.bsky.social just filmed a beautiful Antarctic glass squid (cranchiid) with hooks on the tentacles. Only two possibilities and one is the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis. Hard to be sure whether arm hooks are present (which would confirm colossal) but the clubs look right!

Happy bday colossal squid! The species was described in 1925 so @deepseapod.com & I did a centenary episode on the @deepseapodcast.bsky.social - www.armatusoceanic.com/podcast/056-... 🦑🎉 Gorgeous artwork thanks to Gareth, a guest on our recent #Antarctic voyage with #IntrepidTravel for #ProjectESCA

Beautiful Gonatus antarcticus from a @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive today!

Ascent has begun! First up, a lovely currate octo! @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 801 #SouthSandwichIslands #MarineLife

Hey ocean nerds 🌊 If you love cephalopods like I love cephalopods, I highly recommend @dannastaaf.bsky.social’s excellent book “Monarchs of the Sea: The Extraordinary 500-Million-Year History of Cephalopods” 🐙 🦑 It’s extremely well-written, entertaining, and educational (even if my cat hates it 🤷‍♀️)

IT ONLY TOOK ME TWO MONTHS TO COMMIT TO A SETUP BUT I FINALLY PUT STICKERS ON MY LAPTOP CAN I GET A HELL YEAH!!!!

Giant Pacific Red Octopus. Sometimes all you need is 3 colors for a painting. #marinelife #oceanart #artist

The Wunderpus 🐙 (Wunderpus photogenicus) is a master of disguise - It hides in its burrow with six arms while waving the other two like venomous sea snakes 🐍 🎨 Prints available in my shop, link in bio #MolluskMonday #MolluscMonday #WildlifeIllustration #DigitalArt #ArtYear

My beloved @booksinc.bsky.social where I've been lucky enough to launch several books (and where the booksellers are always supportive no matter how weird my costume) could use some help! If you or anyone you know has any interest in books, you can shop online, including gift cards: booksinc.net

Wishing our lovely cephalopod professionals the best of luck as they search for the colossal squid! Looking forward to seeing the footage that you both will get with #ProjectESCA!

Very lovely Gonatus antarcticus!

Here is the mollusc tree. (We fixed it, you're welcome.) 😇 @sgn.one @oceanspecies.bsky.social @kmkocot.bsky.social @squamiferum.bsky.social www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The Mondays just seem to keep on coming, ready or not. This week was a busy one but #MolluskMonday has arrived! Here's a quick sketch of a Caribbean reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana). If you're lucky enough to see these in the wild, they'll likely be in a small shoal. #artyear #molluscmonday

Just donated $483 to the completion of CephRef 🥳

I'll be speaking at this event next week! Get your signs ready and come on down!

🦑🐙 BIRTHDAY CEPHALOPODS 🐙🦑 A few years ago I offered cephalopod doodles on my birthday, and it was so fun I'm doing it again! send me a prompt today (any cephalopod + anything else) and I'll draw it! here are some examples from 2021/2022

Delighted to speak at #lornegenome25 on using octopus genomes to date ice sheet collapse 🐙🧬❄️ @marine-omics.bsky.social

I’m looking to follow more ppl on this app- writers/journalists, artists, scientists or organizations you love to follow right now. Good news, bad news, no news — link below please!

Close Inkounter! #ProjectESCA gets its next squiddy visitor, a glacial squid (P. glacialis) around 800m. It gifts us a few puffs of ink, then drifts back into the dark Antarctic #deepsea. #antarcticclimateconnections #PureOceanFund @schmidtocean.bsky.social @deepseapod.com

Super cool observation of a rarely observed deep-sea squid, Alluroteuthis antarcticus. Extra beautiful footage too! @deepseapod.com can we ID the fish prey?

Gorgeous male octo (maybe Muusoctopus rigbyae?) at about 1120m in the Antarctic

Alluroteuthis! It spit out a fish! @schmidtocean.bsky.social dive 793 #AntarcticClimateConnections #MarineLife

Can I interest you, amidst these trying times, in a squid fact? Text "SQUID" to 1-833-SCI-TEXT.

Excited to be joining a nonfiction panel at @4csla.bsky.social this afternoon! Yay schools, yay libraries, yay ✨school libraries✨

I think we can all agree the vibes are *not* wonderful. You know what always makes my day better? Getting a cute card in the mail from a friend. I propose that we send valentines this year for vibe enhancement. Skype a Scientist has got *just* the pack. Get 'em at squidfacts.bigcartel.com

...well? Would you? 🐙

Many of us are really feeling helpless. This feeling is why I started @skypeascientist.bsky.social 8 years ago. We were doing the exact same thing then (currently feels worse?). I have an action you can take today. Tell an educator about our program. Connect kids with science in spite of all this.

A really great friend makes awesome crocheted marine critters! I love all the awesome stuff I've gotten! www.etsy.com/shop/AbFabDe...

CALLING ALL ARTISTS! I want to see your art about nature! I’m creating a mini zine that will be available for free about how nature around us impacts us! Check the link in the replies for more information! If you can’t submit, please share this with people you know! #opencall #comics

How many of Bluesky users are scientists? Part of sharing science, is trying to reach others outside of science. What good is sharing science if we are only talking to ourselves?

The best classroom experiences I ever had were when we had a guest in the classroom who was passionate about a subject. Enthusiasm is contagious!

Danna did such a good job representing a truly underrepresented genus of squids! And yes, I can confirm after a year of looking at brachioteuthis... they do indeed wear little beanies like this :)
