I can't be certain, but I think the Marine assigned to Senator Ron Wyden's security detail was prepared, perhaps eager, to break my spine.

Sometimes the AI-generated titles on my interview recordings try to tell a story.

It's standing room only (and people are being turned away over capacity issues) at Senator Ron Wyden's Washington County town hall ilat Pointer Middle School in Hillsboro.

Minimalism.

It's a snow day for sure.

Is my new office perfect? No. Does it come with an office dog? Yes. So it's close enough.

Logos? Logos! Next up: slap these bad boys on a ground level window in downtown Forest Grove. Make office hours that allow for people to meet with the leadership of their local newspaper, including some non-banking hours to make sure those with weird work schedules can access their newspaper fully.

As far back as 100 years ago, people in Oregon were ragging on Ohio.

Oh hey look, we're still unfunded and unstaffed, but I managed to get a story out about Forest Grove and Trimet's reaction to today's federal funding freeze!

Would you like to know how many of these I have received in my inbox 😐

Just a handful of local agencies I'm contacting about the impact to their operations programs and plans due to the federal grant/loan freeze.

My opinion: if you don't show up to an executive session at least once/year, you aren't adequately covering your city/board. You aren't a real watchdog news publication if you're not using the law that uniquely allows Oregon journalists to make sure your governments are following open meeting laws.

Look at me. I am the Forest Grove City Council now. (City council left for labor negotiations at an executive session 😢)

Spent today setting up a basic office in Forest Grove. Since I launched a newspaper in 2017, I've largely worked from home, coffeeshops, every diner in rural western Washington County, my car (I have a steering wheel desk), random houses of people who've thrown open their doors and wifi to me...

New from me: Each month, 14,000 Oregonians open their mailboxes to find Hoodview News, a 40 page, full-color community newspaper espousing virulently anti-trans bigotry, published by a longtime far right figure. A thread /1 www.opb.org/article/2025...

It's #Caturday!

Help me if you can I'm falling down...

Your preview of #Caturday:

The former owner of the other newspaper in Forest Grove, everyone! Add this to the hundred other reasons I'm working my ass off to build local, quality journalism in Oregon.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness etc, so I have commandeered an empty table next to the dais at the Banks Urban Renewal Agency meeting, which followed two city council meetings and a public hearing and is still somehow not the last meeting of the night.

A city councilor just read from a story I wrote during a city council meeting and I think that's a first for me!

Yes, News in the Grove is on Bluesky! But don't expect much, except several tests posts right now. @newsinthegrove.bsky.social

Alright, the cat is out of the bag: I am indeed in the early stages of working with the Forest Grove community to bring a hyperlocal digital and (eventually) a print newspaper to the fine city of Forest Grove, my hometown. We have no staff and about $500 in the bank! www.newsinthegrove.com
