Gulf, Mobile & Ohio We had a first game with 5 players. This is quite different from Chicago Express. The economy is *extremely* harsh - more than any game I have played. I would love to try again but it's only for experienced gamers. #boardgames

Orleans I am a few plays into this lovely prototypical worker placement euro from 2014 that is still ranked 34 at BGG. Learning face to face makes playing at BGA afterwards so much easier. Wooden worker pieces are a big upgrade on the original cardboard chits. #boardgames

Thurn & Taxis Probably the least popular of all the SdJ winners. I played when it came out and didn't think much of it. I learnt respect after getting thrashed repeatedly at BGA, so I got a copy in a large used order from Germany. Mechanically very sound. Definitely worth trying. #boardgames

"Well yes, but it's more that i hate him" - Kingsley Amis on being asked if he was an athiest.

Preparing a discussion panel on this subject at Gama, I've thought about the reasons why I advise young boardgame designers against making it their full time job. I've found four main ones.

Radlands Simple but intense 2 player card battler. I much prefer games like this to CCGs. One deck gives you tons of variability without becoming a lifestyle game and a massive drain of cash. The neoprene mats are a major upgrade. #boardgames

To be able to get a 27-inch 1440p IPS 180Hz for as cheap as this ElectriQ panel is from Laptops Direct feels ridiculous, but here it is. www.eurogamer.net/digitalfound...

actually said this out loud while walking the dog in the park, once I realized I'd brought my airpods with me: "Oh, yeah! I don't have to listen to my fucking thoughts"

I put my copy of Locomotive Werks on a diet. I just trimmed the edges of the box down to size with a knife. The edges are messy but I now have a few centimetres of extra shelf and bag space. #boardgames

For this week only we're offering 30% off physical & 40% off digital across everything on our website except releases from 1st Jan this year & pre-orders! Anyone who's had their eye on a new game for a while, now's your chance: bit.ly/4jTbyCd

Nine Worlds Area majority game by Richard Denning (who runs the UK Boardgames Expo) that is tight and smooth, but does nothing original. The theme and gameplay remind me strongly of Blood Rage and that is a richer game in every way. #boardgames

Ora et Labora All 3 player games should be played on a triangular (trapezoid) table. The rules aren't as difficult as I thought. The game flows well - like all Rosenberg games. It's long, but the complexity is understanding all the building effects so next time will be quicker. 9/10 #boardgames

The year is 1999. You've just finished the installation and hit that .exe. You never knew it at the time, but this was destined to be, one of the greatest pc gaming experiences in your life.

The year is 2026. All 5000 new games released at Essen are trick takers. They're all pretty good.

Chinese map apps have live countdowns for red and green lights 🤯

Inca Empire Train game, but set in pre-Columbian Peru and with no stocks. The rules are straightforward. Lots of long-term strategy. Overall it took a little too long at 2.5 hours, but was still very satisfying. #boardgames

I need to play Catan again. #boardgames

As an American who’s lived in London this is too accurate

Openvibe is a new app that offers a unified timeline for the Threads, Bluesky, and Mastodon accounts you follow. It reminds of the time when TweetDeck used to support Facebook and LinkedIn accounts https://buff.ly/40OdvIX

Schadenfreude This Japanese tricktaker is OOP, so I improvised with Inkscape, but I could have marked up a standard deck. The goal is to come 2nd in points overall. If you come 2nd in a trick you win the card you played + any off-suit discards. The balance is clever. Recommended. #boardgames

Bebop A homage to Reiner Knizia's tile laying games like Babylon and Samurai. Unfortunately it has a layer more complexity than Knizia would have added. #boardgames

This is lazy, knee-jerk policy. Do we really think the killer wouldn’t have been able to acquire a knife from a kitchen? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Stationfall I've tried and failed to teach this twice to two different groups using the tutorial in the rules. It's frustrating as I think there's a good game there but the initial learning hurdle was too much for us. #boardgames

When I’m not working with software, one of my favorite activities is playing modern board games. Here’s my musing on 2024 on my favorite board game social media site boardgamegeek.com/blog/13064/b...

Kogge I have wanted to play this since it came out in 2003 so it was great to finally get a copy and persuade people to play an ugly old game. This is more complicated than, but just as tight as, Hansa Teutonica, by the same designer. There's a free P&P version at BGG. #boardgames
