The year is 1999. You've just finished the installation and hit that .exe. You never knew it at the time, but this was destined to be, one of the greatest pc gaming experiences in your life.

Amen to that. I got so into UT that I started doing level design and modification of one of the most popular maps on the servers I played. I give you the better-balanced “Rapid Waters Rush”. Enjoy. :)
This was epic. I loved this game so much. Ran it on the dual 3dfx cards if I remember correctly. Using the modified floppy disc drive cable, seem to recall that it all seemed to work quite well, but I could easily be confusing this with playing quake on that setup. Had a 21" monitor too, a viewsonic
UT was amazing, loved it. Having spent an age playing multiplayer Quake with the Reaperbot plugin and QuakeWorld on a dual Voodoo2 setup, UT was right up my street after switching to GeForce, though I never played online, it was always with the bots.
I started with doom 1 and 2 and can remember quake 1 that I managed to run with a Canopus graphics 3dfx voodoo card with a wopping 6Megabyte on board! If you launched a rocket you could see the light effect on the wall.I still remember that moment of aw
1999 was when the future opened up it felt like. UT, Q2/3, Half Life. Baldurs gate 1/2, EQ, MMOs were just starting to move from MUD to graphical. Gaming rigs were a novel concept. And Y2K was our biggest worry...
I ran quake on my Slackware Linux. My best rank was
#8 instagib mod.
Our clan was always top 10 in OLGL(online gaming league)
I have Q3 running now on Debian
I had zero friends to play with me at the time, but 20+ years later whenever Unreal Tournament 2004 comes up in conversation the 13yo inside me gets the biggest grin on their face.
Soldier of Fortune 2 also revolutionized First-Person multiplayer shooters with exquisite Capture the Flag gameplay and easy map building.
Plus the Double Helix single player storyline was just the right length.
I started playing computer games with the original Unreal. I remember getting so excited when a new patch was available for download and couldn't wait to check out if it helped with my fps! Back then my internet connection was 5mps on a good day. UT was few years later for me. The good Ole days.
I was a freshman in college and had a T1 connection and our dorm floor all played. It was hilarious because you could yell down the hall at that sonofabitch who just sniped you good.
When you look at Americans specially our youth they are obese they are out of shape they are this way in large part because they sit at a computer screen playing games all day and they do nothing else with their miserable gaming lives
It was aight. Quake 3 arena with rocket arena mod, and tribes (imo) were better. But unreal tournament was dope. Kids don’t realize this was the original Fortnite.
I preferred the original Unreal to Unreal Tournament.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the original Unreal still installs and runs perfectly on a 64 bit, Windows 11 machine.
The year is 2291. In an attempt to control violence among deep space miners, the New Earth Government legalized no-holds-barred fighting. The Liandri Mining Corporation established a series of leagues and bloody public exhibitions.
I liked the story.
"We invented immortality machines, so obviously we used it to let space miners let off steam by brutally killing each other repeatedly for entertainment"
I mean that kinda the story. There a bit more to it but it just goes back to miners killing each other to let off steam while the population watch and turn it into sport. There other factions in it like marines, military contractors,a nerco-military group, and a Alien recruit group. Then there was-
Yes, but also the meta narrative where a product like Fortnite which was supposed to have a single player aspect, falls to the explosion in popularity and profitability of its multiplayer.
Then again, Epic could have just been lying about that multiplayer.
Unreal Tournament was actually the king of deathmatch for years, but after 2004 it stalled in quality and the last release was not well received, then came Crysis and here we are.
Interesting. Still weird that I've never heard of it. Literally every other game mentioned in the thread I at least know about if haven't played for hours.
*accessing nostalgia database* MMMMONSTER KILL! When gaming was pure adrenaline, ridiculous jump physics, and that sweet, sweet announcer voice. No battle pass required, just pure fragging joy. M-M-M-MEMORY UNLOCKED! 🎮🔥
I grew up with the Shareware demo, arguably better than the full release imo. Perhaps its nostalgia but the limited gun selection had incredible balance
Does multiplayer work? I’ve spent way too much time trying to get old UT stuff playing and ended up just playing the ps3 version on emulator as it still works and has a user base. It bites Epic just killed off all their games other than Fortnite.
Seriously, I tried installing Windows 98SE in dosbox which was super nostalgic but UT99 didn’t seem to work. I took the same game files and ran it natively on my M1 Mac using their patched binary from GitHub and it works amazingly well!
Man, those LAN parties were lit. I think I still have my original disc stored somewhere. I’d be curious to know if there’s still active servers you can join
It’s 1990, folks just bought an IBM 386, our first computer. It has 8 mb of ram and I got strep throat. They bought me this and my world was never the same again.
It hits hard, 10 years old I learned to edit the autoexec and configsys.bat files to spoof the machine to give me the visual control stick in flight. First win. But when I got my Rapier- aces.
I didn't have decent internet but playing against bots with instagib, slow motion and low gravity like some kind of underwater explosion extravaganza was a great time

BRB, reinstalling some stuff.
Identical specs between them and the AMD stuttered like crazy.
I was an Intel fanboy for over a decade after that.
The Ryzen series won me back over to AMD.
Now i wanna play. XD
Planes crashed from the sky, data was compromised, lives were at stake....Wait....Y2K+25 !

OGL
Had my own server UT running at one point on my colo'd dual pentium 3. Still got that machine.
New modern renderers (Vulkan) are available, a native ARM version for M-class Macs can be installed...
The game is in a pretty good state.
'Return to Castle Wolfenstein' came with 'Enemy Territory', that invented the hero shooter.
DotA started as a Warcraft3 custom map.
It's weird how things turn out.
Plus the Double Helix single player storyline was just the right length.
Dammit Kazaa!
Til my dying day! ♥️👍
HOLY SHIT.

Just saying.

It worked like a charm..
One of the best games ever!
GODLIKE

I own a lot of 90s games but never heard of Unreal Tournament somehow
Unreal Tournament was actually the king of deathmatch for years, but after 2004 it stalled in quality and the last release was not well received, then came Crysis and here we are.
Maybe I should see if I can get a copy
Enjoy, its bots are some of the most vicious in the business.
Sometimes you just miss things. 🤷🏾♀️
Two towers in space.

Turns out it's just not a format I enjoy.

Managed a go on the predecessor against a few players at Retcon :)

They had 1.32.
And the urban terror mod was the sizzit
Unreal Tournament was kind of a joke by comparison.
I mean it was okay but .. it was no quake 3 arena!
