This is why I don't like the common journalistic tic of referring to the current Republican appointees to the Court as "conservatives." They may be many things, but they aren't conservative-at least not in the Burkean sense. Call them reactionaries or Republican hacks, but they're not conservatives.

The battles about housing there go back at least 40 years. Then-Mayor Feinstein pushed for housing there back in 1983. After multiple ballot measures in 80s & early 90s, housing proposals fell to wayside for years. Fortunately, ultimate project is much larger than 200-unit proposals from the 80s.

I hope this is correct, but I'm worried the statutory cross-reference defining "rail transit" might be interpreted to exclude commuter rail & intercity rail stations. (See Public Utilities Code sec. 99602(k).) If that's the case, Contra Costa & San Mateo Counties wouldn't have Tier 1 or 2 TOD stops.

Yes! And the constitution gives Congress many other powers related to foreign affairs. My personal favorite is its power to grant letters of marque & reprisal, but also power to provide for the common defense, declare war, define & punish felonies on high seas, make rules for army & navy, etc.

Thanks. My experience was different than that edge case. A Richmond train arrived before an Antioch train. The platform signs gave an earlier "ETD" for the Richmond train, so I got on it. The Antioch train nonetheless departed first, before its ETD. I hope the fix will address my situation too.

The city attorney clarified later that the board’s final vote on service cuts will require the support of at least 4 of the directors. Only 3 voted in support of service cuts today. (1 director was absent, 1 seat is vacant.) It’s still possible that the board will not ultimately approve service cuts

California chronically under funds transit operations compared to other states. This is particularly true of Bay Area operators. BART, SFMTA, AC Transit, and Caltrain see the least funding of all: 12% of operations, compared with 20% statewide.

This is Orwellian. Fundamentally this framework is about massive tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy partially paid for by massive cuts to Medicaid. Hiding that is a grave disservice to NPR's readers and listeners.

It's very disturbing that staff isn't even providing the board & the public with basic data about how much revenue this would raise. The board made it clear that it wanted to consider all options for avoiding service cuts this summer, but staff is denying it crucial info for making informed decision

Unfortunate first sentence. The most disruptive aspects of the project were for utility work, not traffic changes. The media's lesson from the project (& from the Van Ness BRT project), however, seems to be that traffic changes are disruptive rather than that utility work can be disruptive.
