DOGE recommends cuts to the FAA. Hundreds of workers get fired, including those tasked with producing air traffic navigation maps. Now Starlink is reportedly in line to take over a $2 billion contract to upgrade the nation's air traffic control systems. See how this works?

Researchers say the Trump administration's plan to slash payments for indirect costs will hamper new medical science. One example? A lab studying respiratory viruses faces losing half its staff.

The enemy from within strikes again. Our president which is a KGB asset puts Americans lives at risk once again. CIA scrambles after White House email compromises undercover officers' names. www.rawstory.com/cia-officers...

This is the House Republican budget plan that Donald Trump endorsed. Trickle up economics.

The Gilded Age is Trump's ideal--let's check the stats, shall we? --most Americans disenfranchised --most Americans in extreme poverty --most Americans worked 12 hour workdays, 6-7 days a week --most Americans consumed unsafe food, water, medicine The Gilded Age was great only for the rich folks

This gets my vote for tweet/post of the year. This is a RED ALERT post. This is exactly why he’s doing it.

Pay attention to this. Replacing JAGs with loyalists enables whatever orders Trump and Hegseth issue to be interpreted as lawful.

Next, purge the military to install loyalists. www.cnn.com/2025/02/21/p...

So the President not only fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. He also fired the top JAGs at the Army, Navy and Air Force. Those are the lead people who determine what is a legal order and what is not. So if you're planning to do things that are illegal they're the most obvious obstacle.

And because 2025 is the gift that keeps on giving, today my lab space was condemned

Ahhh, that’s how they’re going to avoid the pissed-off voters. 69M fewer women voters who changed their name upon marriage, by convention. CALL to vote NO on the #SAVEact. Holy $h!t - via Jessica Yellin

Trump and Musk just destroyed the lives of more than 200,000 families with their massive layoffs of federal workers-- and MAGA members of Congress are giddy. The breaking point is coming...

Entirely predictable. Zuckerberg doesn’t believe in equal opportunity, inclusivity or reversing years of discrimination and clearly never has. Trump has revealed the hypocrisy of those who seek favour rather than seeking fairness and opportunity.

First nuclear weapons management, now this. No one - Democrat or Republican - voted for this kind of incompetence.

Help get the word out about importance of NIH, NSF, and IES and the role that these agencies serve to support health, improve education, and advance the economy in their states. @fabbs.org is hosting advocacy office hours for 3 key states, WV, LA, ME, if CNS members want to sign up: 🧪

So a former postdoc from our department had just started as a PO at NIH and was terminated in the wave of terminations last week. He is in the research triangle and a phenomenal scientist with expertise in stress and glia. If anyone in the RTI is hiring asap please let me know! #neuroskyence

Got word that several NIH employees in a group working on cancer clinical trials got terminated via email this evening. “The [cancer research] trials will literally not be able to function without us.” Trump and Musk are killing cancer research. 🧪

Well, the news dump for NIH this weekend was a Saturday evening news dump. We are hearing about scores of talented scientists and staff being fired via email tonight.

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

NIH study section was on today! R36 applications (a diversity mechanism) were discussed (although some components of other proposals were not reviewed)

BREAKING: 22 states sue NIH over Trump administration's new 15% cap on overhead for federal research grants. Suit filed federal court in Boston contends lifesaving research 'will grind to a halt' under the policy. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

This is what should be on every front page right now. What's happening in the US right now is an illegal power grab by a private citizen. IT'S A COUP. It's a digital coup. It's Musk who's leading it. The consequences are terrifying. And it's coming for us next. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/broligar...

BREAKING: A federal judge has determined that the Trump administration is violating his order lifting the blanket spending freeze on federal grant programs. He is orderin gthe administration to immediately unfreeze funds, including for NIH and the IRA. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl. can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

NEW: The Department of Education told employees late Friday that they must review and terminate all programs, contracts and policies that affirm the existence of transgender people. By @jodiscohen.bsky.social and @jsmithrichards.bsky.social

If there's one thing we want scientists🧪 to take away this weekend it's this: "Local [TV] channels talk to faculty all the time." Lots is happening. Legal & political efforts will gear up. Organizing scientists is key—but will take time. But every scientist can call their local TV station today.

Top comment on the recent NYT story on DOGE’s young aides www.nytimes.com/shared/comme...

Under fascism, no one is safe. Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc. Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations. Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

Tesla earned $2.3 billion in the United States in 2024. You'd think it paid a lot in taxes, right? Well it paid precisely $0 in federal income taxes last year. You want waste and fraud? Look at what some big corporations and the rich are getting away with.

Hey @altnih4science.bsky.social, what is the best way to support our program officers during this? I want to tell them to hang in there and to fight like hell, but it seems weird to email them with that - plus they probably can't respond and are flooded with too many things already. Any suggestions?

Good explainer. Will be devastating for all research universities and most med schools.

Absolutely aimed to destroy the universities. This will cost hundred of thousands of jobs

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...
