Next week & the following, my student teacher will engage in his solo teaching. He is going to be fantastic & I’m going to drastically reduce my news intake during that small window 🙏🏻💛

Liberating education can change our understanding of reality. But this Is not the same thing as changing reality itself. No. Only political action in society can make social transformation. — Paulo Freire

"I come not to praise education but to murder it."

To be clear, “Vance skis in jeans” is Vermont’s highest insult. This is Final Boss Nuclear Insult level in the Vermont linguistic hierarchy.

JD Vance decided to come to Vermont to ski this weekend, and the people who work at the mountain are straight-up trolling him on official channels. (Will post a local news link as soon as there is one. This is happening in real time today.)

Vermont showed up today - multiple protests around the area JDV is skiing, including this incredible protest post from the resort’s snow reporter (has since been taken down)

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Waitsfield on Saturday morning to protest Vice President JD Vance, who is visiting Vermont with his family for a ski trip this weekend.

It took seeing adult bullies to understand that my childhood bullies didn’t even really want to hurt me, they just wanted to feel powerful and how I felt about it wasn’t even in the equation. I can’t imagine someone not outgrowing that, but apparently it happens quite a lot!

“Do you hear the people sing…”

Surreal to watch Trump and Vance so thoroughly humiliate themselves and give the rest of the world the final motivation they need to unite against the Putin surrogacy. It’s so shocking!

This is one of the scariest, most open top level displays of gangsterism I’ve seen yet. I think of those I know who’ve lost loved ones in Ukraine. Fuck these motherfucking fascists now and forever.

You take away Joann Fabrics, and now all of these crafty ladies have time on their hands

If you’re at home today, not spending money, and feeling bored, you might be wondering, “What could I do?” Well, task one: you can make random reports on this website: enddei.ed.gov

None of us can be sure what will “work.” You try multiple things and find your way in. Read some histories of the Civil Rights Movement by those who participated. They were never “sure” of what would work. Some campaigns fizzled out. But persistence, creativity, determination, and focus were key.

Alright Vermonters: let’s make VERY sure that Vance does not see rest while here.

No words. Just sobs. What are we doing? www.nytimes.com/2025/02/23/h...

AFT has put out a letter about this, but if you are a public school employee in the following states, your pension fund has Tesla holdings and you should consider a divestment campaign: AL, AZ, CA, CO, KY, MD, MI, NM, NY, OR, PA, TX, and UT. #edusky

FLOOD THEM. These nazi scum looking for rats might also be interested in, say, the complete PDF of The Bee Movie.

The world is on fire AND today was a good day. You know… all the things.

Hmm, I wonder what messages people could send to the dept of ed using this form at www.ed.gov/about/news/p...

Just the most incredibly snowy day read! (I have a whole lot of school-based reading to do, but keep returning to this one!) Thank you @zinnedproject.bsky.social for always sending the very best mail! Thank you @eveewing.bsky.social for writing this beautiful text 🙏🏻💛

My fellow Vermonters, assemble!! www.mobilize.us/indivisiblem...

For some reason, can’t stop thinking of the Ukrainian woman who, after cursing out the Russian soldiers in her town, told them, “You should put sunflower seeds in your pockets so that they will grow on Ukranian land after you die.” Coldest of the cold. #respect

“The silence on Israel and Gaza has certainly been noticeable, and amplifies the feelings of isolation among educators who are trying to teach in a time of moral crisis.”

"Despite concerns, Facing History is now considering formalizing a policy of silence. . . .These decisions come amid a wide-ranging attack on progressive education across the US, especially on teachers who voice support for Palestinians." -- from indepth article in @jewishcurrents.bsky.social ⬇️

I've been thinking about Dr. Koritha Mitchell concept of “know-your-place aggression" when discussing book bans, anti-DEI, anti-CRT, anti-LGBTQ edu policies. These bills/EOs read as, "BIPOC, LGBTQ, disabled students can be in K-12 schools (for now), but know you won't be read, heard, or supported."

In other news, Ramadan is starting on Saturday. Be kind to your Muslims friends who are fasting. If you think we're ignoring you around 5 pm, just know we're in a Ramadan Hibernation Zone preparing for sunset when we can eat and drink.

History is repeating itself. There were more LGBTQ people removed from government during the lavender scare than were suspected communists during the red scare. They only really taught the latter in history classes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavende...

Early intervention feels like such a blessing for our family. 💛 Hoping it continues to serve families for many years to come 🤞🏻🙏🏻💛

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

Afternoon chalking.

#tdih 1943, Sophie Scholl, Hans Scholl, & Christoph Probst -- members of the White Rose -- were executed 💔 for their role in urging students to rise up & overthrow the Nazi government. #Resist In face of evil, "why do you not rouse yourselves?" they implored. ⬇️ www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/wh...

Today was such a joyful day with our goofy 9th graders & delightful upperclassmen. Thankful for these moments during an otherwise wild ride.

Just a reminder that fascists, authoritarians, dictators of all stripes destroy archives— books, museums, databases, &c— because those things provide windows onto a plurality of other ways we might organize the world. And so preserving, defending, and spreading that knowledge harms those regimes.

This morning’s bumper music following a story on deportation was gutting. Thankful @vermontpublic.bsky.social brings humanity into the most inhumane of stories 💔
