Yeah, 100%! I think that follows a similar shift in their design focus and priorities; the small things, the nuance, reduced to make way for more "management" and building mechanics.

It's funny, I often think about how technical constraints of yesteryear are that made quirky, small experiences like that possible, and they're rarely the aim in today's market.

You become Tom Nook's coworker, rather than him and his enterprises being just another aspect of your life, as consumerism is in our day to day lives. I guess I just miss that more rural, grounded experience, instead of flying to a deserted island where you get to build a resort.

It's an exercise in being "alone" in the unfamiliar and finding belonging. I think those early games were a really healthy exploration of that experience.
More recent titles instead place you in a central authoritative role; "you're the mayor! You're the island rep! The campsite director!"

Past Animal Crossing titles have had, for lack of a better description, a sort of "beautiful melancholy" to them. You're getting a fresh start in life arriving to a new town, lots of uncertainty and new people, but a kind of solace and peacefulness to it all.

I think about this all the time. I'm generally at my happiest when it rains... so why am I in SoCal? Lol.
