Note that what is being tested here is not even what most academic historians would recognize as worth asking, but just basic ‘facts’ (compiled by a research team then cross compared to genAI multiple choice responses). It can’t pass school rote learning, it sure AF can’t do independent research 🗃️

Word of day is ‘unasinous’ (17th century): united in stupidity. A riff on ‘unanimous’: which comes from the Latin for ‘one mind’. ‘Unasinous’ means ‘one ass’.

A little update - we weren’t really posting on X as it stood, but after Musk’s behaviour yesterday we will no longer be posting anything on that site (and will eventually delete our account) and will be primarily posting here (or Mastodon). This quote from Hannah Arendt feels pertinent today.

For the avoidance of any doubt, a Roman salute and a Nazi salute are the exact same thing and anyone arguing over nomenclature is either doing it in bad faith or high ignorant

Henry Ford leveraged his success to spread antisemitism, through The International Jew in the Dear born Independent. He and other industrialists admired fascism for its "order" and anti-labor stance. Concurrent unchecked economic power often aligns with dangerous ideologies. Seemed relevant 🗃️

For Blue Monday we can't think of anything more appropriate than this charming depiction of a man getting his face eaten off by a leopard. #MosaicMonday

LA fires are a good reminder that the only difference between me and any refugee is luck.

Happy holidays to all of the academics, tired and overworked, prepared and well-organised, employed and unemployed, energetic and burnt out. May your tests grade well and your research be fruitful ! 🗃️

H-Net providers an invaluable service to those of us in the humanities. It would be great to see their purview extend. That is only possible if poeple donate to this fantastic service! Please consider doing so if you haven't already. 🗃️

historians:

I am now, for the first time in my life, inside Free Syria. That’s a sentence I never thought I’d live long enough to say.

'it's only aristocracy if its from Europe, otherwise it's just sparkling nepotism' - my gf nitzan

A 🧵 about farting and media echoes. #skystorians

We're going to continue hearing these stories as the underground prisons and such continue to be liberated. Very sad but at least they have their freedom now

I’m not a Syrian refugee anymore. I’m Syrian. Just Syrian.

🗃️Something I noticed (as an unemployed academic sleuth) since I started my PhD Hunt is the absolutely ABYSMAL quality of calls for and job adverts for PhDs and Calls for Papers The AI wave has taken on students but overworked faculty have also become a part of it (at least in Noord Europa)

we’re all trying to find the guy who did this

Korea Expert here. I’ll explain what’s going on over there because the Orient can be confusing to Westerners. In Korea, there is a concept known as “the law.” (법) This is a set of rules which are enforced to encourage prosocial behavior and ensure stability which leaders aren’t allowed to break.

literally today

You might think a very short coup in South Korea an aberrant situation but ironically it is not the shortest lived coup attempt (if that's what it was) Zambia had two attempts, one in the 1990 (lasting 6 hours) and another in 1997(lasting 3 hours)! #history

Beckett's infamous line from endgame 'we still find it funny, but we don't laugh anymore' sums up the Irish s response to pretty much anything
