the rise of the fascist nerds was anticipated by Ellen Ullman's 1995 essay "Out of Time: Reflections on the Programming Life."

Yes, it is entirely correct to point out that ICE officers do not have any legal authority to break into somebody’s home unless they get a judicial warrant; which they generally cannot do, because judges only issue warrants for probable cause of crimes, not immigration law violations.

No amount of personal growth you can do will have the same level of impact on those around you as opening your heart to the possibility of being wrong.

This is a virtuoso piece of writing. www.theatlantic.com/culture/arch... "Let us agree... that social media totally rots. It contains some good stuff, but overall, it is like a cookie the size of a football field with three chocolate chips in it, plus an equivalent number of staples."

Political liberalism has a lot of flaws but one of the cool things about it is how it's constructed around the insight that monarchy is a fundamental affront to human dignity 👍

Incredible stuff in here: They ID'ed him, in part, by going to court hearings and watching him post

I don’t know if you guys know this but Carly Rae Jepsen has made some fucking masterpieces of albums, multiple times, without breaking a sweat

Bright passionate people who wanted to dedicate their lives to public service were fired in a mass email over the holiday weekend. This has absolutely nothing to do with efficiency, fraud, waste, or abuse. And your life will be worse because of it.

It's annoying how clearly this is going to play out. They gut the FAA. Therefore, the FAA can't do its job well because it was gutted. Therefore, they say "The FAA sucks, we have to privatize it." which is what Project 2025 wants to do. They're manufacturing the crises for their end goal.

These are Fort Campbell-based 101st Airborne Division soldiers escorting the Little Rock Nine in 1957. Fort Campbell is erasing *its own* history.

As a political scientist who studies countries that managed to stop the slide into authoritarianism, I can assure you that ***refraining from provoking the authoritarian*** is not how it works. Without further ado, I will now go tear out another chunk of hair.

This is one of my favorite poems of all time, written by the wonderful & greatly missed John M. Ford. I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently. So I thought I would share it.

The fun thing about America having centuries of unbroken institutional legitimacy is that the President can publicly say "I am doing a coup, illegally, in order to break the law for my own benefit" and 95% of people on both sides will say, "Oh no, he's not, that'd be crazy."

This tax season, we're here to remind you about TurboTax's 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing their taxes for free. (Published Oct. 2019)

History buffs will know that every authoritarian leader eventually converges on some version of: "I *am* the state. I can not break the law, I am the law, the law is instantiated in me." Our march to authoritarianism so far has been excruciatingly by-the-book. Hitting every beat. No surprises.

not sure what's worse about the DOGE site: unsecured databases, leaking of classified information, or these chart crimes

If only Tolkien had written anything about the hubris of a powerful entity trying to make life based on the elves...

This is so antithetical to the English legal tradition that they killed Charles I about it, and then they couped James II

This raggedy bitch got a ‘c.’ by his birth year like he was Tutankhamun

The Stonewall Inn released a response to the National Parks Service removing the word transgender from the park outside of the Inn. A great reminder that we have to look after each other

The circumstances are “we’re not sure if there is a Federal Trade Commission anymore and we’d like to try something”

At this point, there are only two options: A) Elon is so dishonest that he is willing to peddle obvious lies to score PR points B) Elon really is this stupid

Hey folks if you got the most recent iOS update, it’s real simple to turn off Apple Intelligence (which has been toggled on by default in hopes you’ll just go with it) Right there in settings you have “Apple Intelligence & Siri” with a toggle just for AI Flip that switch babyyyy

This might be the most nakedly corrupt document I’ve seen on DOJ letterhead — and I wrote a history of Watergate!

Yes this agency is more or less a free enormous benefit for the public and a cost to rich frauds

Fabulous 🇺🇸💥

Rule 2. If you ever find yourself in a bar fight and someone wants to join in on your side, don't bring up old s**t until the fight is over. Rule 1. Know when you are in a bar fight. Welcome to the fight, Kansas Republicans.

For folks who are surprised about, or shocked by, Vance calling on Trump to ignore judges, he’s been saying it for a while but much of our political press wasn’t paying attention:

Another thing about regulation: everyone – even me – is in favour of simplifying things. Then you get to the details and have to ask "well, should we get rid of this one about fire testing cladding?" And all of a sudden, you have the same number of regulations, because they're all there for a reason

Oops 😬

Major breaking trans news: The States of Washington, Minnesota, and Oregon have sued the Trump administration to block it from enforcing a national gender affirming care ban for those under 19 years of age. This is the second major lawsuit over Trump's trans ban EO. Docs to come.

New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.

Breaking news: State attorneys general from California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, Vermont, and Wisconsin advise Trump's EO banning trans care is unlawful, hospitals should provide care. Big counter salvo!
