Agreed that it would be a disaster. Maybe the universities should not have based their entire financing model on overcharging overseas students in the first place.

The UK govt is funding both masters and PhDs in AI. I’m saying that if you want cutting edge AI that involves public funds going to the tech sector. The larger question is what could that money have been used for instead? Should we pour public funds into risky AI ventures?

Yeah not good, but increasingly university funding is unrelated to AI development in the UK. Cutting edge models are developed by private companies (i.e Google Deepmind or Graphcore) and the govt is making sure that the regulatory environment is good for these while funding seed ventures and PhDs.
