The changes at @climate.noaa.gov in the US are extremely concerning, not only for the US’ preparedness to tackle ongoing #climate impacts, but for the international science community. These are world-class minds, and we need them in this moment.

COP29 concluded with more than a few agenda items left unresolved. One was the 'just transition work programme'. What happened during these negotiations? And how can we ensure a better outcome at COP30?

At the 62nd session of @ipcc.bsky.social #IPCC62 in Hangzhou 🇨🇳, discussing chapter outlines and timelines for the 7th Assessment Report to ensure the latest science informs the next #GlobalStocktake under the #ParisAgreement.

New 1.5°C aligned NDC climate targets were due this week, but few have been announced. We are producing science-based economy-wide 2030 and 2035 emissions targets for key countries on our 1.5°C national pathway explorer. 1p5ndc-pathways.climateanalytics.org

Great coverage of our recent study on 2024 warming and the 1.5°C limit by @tinymaddie.bsky.social here: www.newscientist.com/article/2467... @bevacquae.bsky.social

With 2024 coming in at or above #1o5C, and a run of 12 months to June 2024 where monthly warming was at or above 1.5°C, questions are coming about whether or not the longer-term 1.5°C limit set out in the Paris Agreement has been reached. 2 papers out today look at these Qs. 🧵👇

Excellent thread on our new paper in Nature Climate Change on what a year above 1.5°C means for the Paris Agreements lower temperature target

Today is the day 198 governments were supposed to have submitted a strong 2035 #climate target. How many have done so? Of the countries we analyse: six. The UK is the only country to have submitted a 1.5˚C compatible target. Read our press release here bit.ly/CAT_Feb10

Trump's policies could raise cumulative US emissions by 2–4 billion tonnes of CO2 by 2030, says the @catclimate.bsky.social, but market forces may prevent this.

2025 will a big year for climate action – countries have been asked to set new NDCs by 10 Feb. The 1.5°C national pathway explorer shows how much they need to cut emissions by 2030 and 2035 to keep 1.5°C in reach. 📊 NEW: factsheets for 7 key countries

Ocean heatwave may have killed 30,000 fish off Western Australia. @billhare.bsky.social told @australia.theguardian.com marine heatwaves were known to trigger “extreme low oxygen events, which then create a bigger environmental mess” – though it's unclear if this contributed to the fish dying.

Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement could cause problems for the US' clean tech industry, says our CEO @billhare.bsky.social to @news.dw.com. "Other countries now have the opportunity to step up and take over those market opportunities."

With the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, “the world is more likely to warm slightly more,″ said @billhare.bsky.social. “The more the world warms, the faster we will experience more extreme weather events... The U.S. will not be exempt from such events.”

Trump is taking aim at appliance conservation standards to boost water flow. @thomashle.bsky.social told @apnews.com that industry see energy efficiency as adding more constraints on them. "They tend to overlook the benefits that will be gained from the measures.” apnews.com/article/trum...

Trump has signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the Paris Agreement, for the second time. But the Paris Agreement will remain the engine of global climate action long after Trump’s final term in office. See our full statement:

Donald Trump has again taken the US out of the Paris Agreement. But the Paris Agreement will survive a US withdrawal: it did so before and will do so again, but it will take solidarity and leadership from key countries to do so.
