NOAA is an absolute mess, and it’ll be worse tomorrow. Please help us. There have already been over 1,000 terminations. It’s not just layoffs—Elon Musk and his staffers are trying to completely dismantle us. Today, there were tons of firings, and more are coming tomorrow.

"The anonymous source told OU Daily they believe the minimum staffing level required for tornado events may not be met after these layoffs. The National Weather Service issues tornado warnings and watches." www.oudaily.com/news/nationa...

Maybe instead of purging the Social Security workers who make sure seniors get their checks on time, we should be expanding benefits to make life a little easier for your parents and grandparents.

The National Weather Service is THE ONLY source of weather data in the US. Every weather app, local broadcaster, and weather forecast map is based on NWS data from NOAA. This is a ridiculously stupid own goal for the US that will disrupt all kinds of social and economic activity, and endanger lives.

This is one of the many reasons we need universal healthcare (and universal social safety net programs more generally). When access to support is means-tested, that support becomes stigmatized. And that stigma reinforces the idea that only some people are deserving of dignity.

!! Earlier today the Trump administration terminated all contracts with refugee resettlement organizations; a day AFTER a judge blocked Trump's refugee resettlement order. This would make any future resettlement impossible. Now the plaintiffs in that case are seeking an emergency status conference.

This is a sign of how upside down the constitutional order is right now. The President is supposed to ask Congress for money, not the other way around! #mepolitics

It's absolutely insane that Elon Musk and his wrecking crew are saying they're firing entire swaths of our government infrastructure and the press are just like "oh that's sad but what are you gonna do, guess they're fired." It is batshit crazypants, and it's being covered like normal policy choices

Happening across government: pushing out general counsels to ensure the internal referees will say that whatever Trump wants to do is perfectly legal.

Every single philanthropic institution needs to do this rather than retracting right now. abcnews-go-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/abcnews....

This is going to be an absolute catastrophe in ways we can’t imagine, but for regular people: Your weather app won’t work anymore

we’ve no doubt had sexual predators in office forever, but the fact that people are knowingly, willingly voting for predatory men at all levels of government is disturbing in a way that’s difficult to articulate.

hand in hand with eugenics. increasingly what's behind each door for each piece of this multipart philosophy

Why haven't we seen more backlash against the GOP's proposed cuts to Medicaid? One reason is that people may not know they're on Medicaid, because Medicaid has different names in different states (see 🧵). Another is that some people may not realize that they (or their kids) could qualify.

a side issue that struck me while reporting on Indiana banning student IDs for voting: how freaking strict Indiana is in tossing ballots when you make an error! at the sole polling place on campus at IU Bloomington, 300 people cast provisional ballots in November... & every single one was rejected!

just gonna be the thousandth person to remind you all that segregationists start the open bigotry with people they feel they can target most easily but do not end there

I think that it's important to share examples of visible dissent. Normalcy bias is real. Sharing how people continue to dissent is helpful.

"It is no exaggeration to say this will kill people—mainly people who are elderly, disabled and/or poor. Society’s most vulnerable sit in the crosshairs of our nation’s wealthiest people who have absolutely everything, but somehow always want more."

Wow—Trump is firing and banning all trans people from the military, per DoD memo. “Military service by members and applicants for military service who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria is incompatible with military service.” Part of memo:

I honestly don’t know why they frame it as if these companies are reluctantly giving up DEI- these companies are disinvesting in DEI because they don’t think the courts or the political system will punish them for discrimination anymore. DEI existed for most as a lawsuit barrier.

More not so fun measles facts 🦠wipes out up to 73% of your antibodies to bacterial and viral infections (immune amnesia) 🦠prior to the vaccine, measles killed 2.6 million people a year 🦠can survive 2 hours in a room after an infected person leaves 🦠99% of unimmunized that are exposed are infected

Man millions of us are really gonna die in all kinds of old and new and interesting ways

Congressional District Impact of Medicaid Cuts - find your district: www.americanprogress.org/article/the-...

I just set up a monthly donation to @propublica.org and encourage you to consider doing the same. Now, more than ever, we need strong, independent journalism!

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

The Trump Administration is using the weight of the federal government to force segregation and any analysis, organizing, or activation that attempts to minimize or work around this fact is going to fail.

I'm no politician, but there's not a representative in this country who couldn't find a bright, young, patriotic federal employee from their district who got the buzz saw from Musk and Trump. Get them on camera. Make these job losses personal, ya know.

Just yesterday while on PBS News Hour I said that I will have confidence that federal vaccine policy is uncompromised as long as the external advisory committees continue to meet. Now meetings for both VRBPAC and ACIP have been cancelled. I don't like this.

Just a reminder that we have Medicaid coverage of prenatal care and childbirth because IT SAVES MONEY IN THE LONG RUN. Ditto for SNAP, Head Start, free public K-12 education, and all the other things we do for kids. We do this stuff because we learned that it’s less expensive than the alternative.

Took 5 min today and whipped up simple designs in Canva. Sized to fix 2 x 4" and 1 x 1 5/8" mailing labels. Print them by the sheet and stick them up: lampposts, parking meters, sidewalks. (Just don't be a jerk.) Remind people this isn't normal & they're not alone, and encourage them to act.

NEW: Indiana already has stringent voter ID rules... & the GOP is advancing a bill right now to strip university IDs from the list of options you can use. This would make it much harder for students to vote. At polling site at IU Bloomington, 2/3rds of voters in November used their student IDs.

I’m both dismayed and frankly terrified by the number of well informed and smart people who are witnessing the Nazi-billionaire fascist takeover of their own country yet unable or unwilling to say literally any of these words and call a thing a thing.

Breaking: FDA's March meeting to select flu shot strains for 2025-2026 season has been canceled per email sent to committee members, a VRBPAC member told me. drug companies need about 6 months leeway to make shots in time for fall vax campaigns. #healthpolicy

🚨 The Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity’s account on X has been DELETED. This administration is making its priorities clear: protecting landlords who discriminate & turning a blind eye to tenants facing injustice.

Hi, it's me again. THIS IS A COUP. AN ACTUAL COUP. Not a drill, not a test, just a COUP. We are experiencing a coup in the United States, and the fact that we're not acting like that's an emergency is a problem. IT IS DAY 38 OF THIS COUP.

If you're in higher ed, might want to attend this webinar next Tuesday. I'll be speaking along with leaders of the host organizations. So much coming at us now!

It is really hard to watch people willfully tear down an infrastructure that allowed us to double lifespans, drastically reduce poverty, and become one of the richest countries in the world.

Not exactly lefty fringe orgs they are going after: "Other affected contractors, according to the HUD email reviewed by TPM, are Enterprise Community Partners, LISC, Cloudburst Consulting, Corporation for Supportive Housing, BCT Partners, and Homebase Center for Common Concerns."

The point of sudden mass layoffs isn't just to shrink the federal budget. It's to create a climate of fear that makes workers across the economy too scared to speak out.

I know a lot of people want to because it is incredibly scary and only getting scarier but burying your head in the sand isn’t going to protect you. You have to accept the sober analysis coming from people who have been doing this along time and except the reality we now inhabit.

Academic research essentially on hold in 70 health fields like "gene regulation in cancer" and "tumor evolution, heterogeneity, and metastasis."

Indiana may soon make voting much tougher for college students: Legislation banning the use of student IDs for voting passed the state Senate with near unanimous Republican support in early February. boltsmag.org/indiana...

Trump and Musk claim they’re saving billions through DOGE’s mass purge of federal bureaucracy. Instead, the administration has spent $710 billion in its first month, nearly a billion more than Joe Biden.

Bezos is not acting out of fear. He is participating in a political project that benefits him. This distinction is important.

Oligarchy is the billionaire owner of The Washington Post deciding which opinions you should and shouldn’t hear.

The headline that 21 DOGE staffers have resigned is a little misleading. These were employees of the United States Digital Service, which existed pre-administration and was absorbed into Musk’s team. These aren’t the young idiots; these are actual civil servants.

NY Times please stop posting political advice from guy whose big election victory was beating George Herbert Walker Bush. Doing nothing is not an option.

I made a little zine about calling your congresspeople and put copies out at my birthday party. I was delighted that more than 20 people took copies, as well as a dozen copies of the Don't Just Do Nothing zine I printed out.
