For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Reaching out to all Americans through the media to explain how decreasing funding of the NIH will have irreversible harm for developing therapies for all diseases. Please spread the word to your families and friends and contact your congressional representatives. www.nbcnews.com/science/scie...

Almost all grant-review meetings under Trump 2.0 remain suspended at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), preventing the world’s largest public funder of biomedical research from spending much of its US$47 billion annual budget. https://go.nature.com/4gM6oW4

Are you interested in analyzing small samples from marginalized communities and aren't sure how? My new commentary in AJE's collection on Methods in Social Epidemiology lays out rec's for researchers, public health practitioners, and data owners. DM your email address if you need access.

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Dear Democratic Party: why are you not screaming this from every rooftop? Why are you not holding press conferences with these poor fired people - putting a face on what the richest man is destroying?

soon enough, the mere presence of black and latino students on campus will be illegal racial discrimination against white students www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

This is a dangerous (and deeply embarrassing) moment for our country. Republicans just put a conspiracy theorist in charge of one of the most important federal agencies for safeguarding public health and guiding the nation through health crises.

“It is a misnomer to call these funds indirect costs. They are essential to the safe and ethical performance of research. The environment in which research is conducted is highly specialized and costly.” 🧪 Great editorial by @holdenthorp.bsky.social in @science.org

Did y’all know that #NIH really impacts rural state health too. Look at these amazing stats from Arkansas showing NiH impact there. Examined effect of increasing NIH funding from 2016-2022 and economic impact that had. NIH grants = rural state economic growth. nwa.uams.edu/blog/chr/new...

BREAKING: 22 states sue NIH over Trump administration's new 15% cap on overhead for federal research grants. Suit filed federal court in Boston contends lifesaving research 'will grind to a halt' under the policy. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

The NIH cuts are being spun as a way to eliminate bloated university bureaucracy. And looking at the sheer numbers, I get it. But in fact the story is the exact opposite. The federal research grants system is highly efficient. And it super charges American innovation. 🧵 1/

The standard budget for an R01 hasn’t changed in twenty years. During that time, salaries have nearly 2x and competition is 📈. We are expected to produce 2x as much on 1/2 the $. Academia is dirt cheap relative to industry. Institutions don’t make money on NIH research. 1/

I don’t want to overreact, no one knows what will happen, I just know that I am spending my Friday night reviewing grants for NIH — unpaid. If anyone thinks there is some big conspiracy with scientists/institutions ripping off the federal government then they are either ignorant or lying.

🔬 NIH’s new policy to cap indirect costs at 15% is a major blow to research institutions. 🧪 💰 Less funding for operations = fewer resources for science. ⚠️ Small institutions may struggle to sustain research. 🏛️ This could impact the future of NIH-funded projects. 🔗 grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

What does this mean, for non researchers? 💰Indirect costs are the expenses that research institutions (such as universities) incur to support federally funded research projects, like those funded by the NIH.
