It's the requestor's responsibility to place the signs, not SDOT's. You're probably right about SDOT not working on Saturday evenings. π

Even if it is legit, these are theoretically enforceable only after 24 hours from the time they were first posted.
As for being on only half the block, when I requested one a while back, I was forced to apply for the entire block even though really I needed only two spots for a moving truck.

No offense taken! We've all worked with *that* PM2 who read too many times that he was the "CEO of the product" and who's given all of us a (sometimes deserved) bad reputation.

If airlines prioritized child safety over profit, and if the government didn't cave to their lobbying, flying infants in their own seats would be mandatory *and* that extra ticket would come at a very steep discount. Amtrak and most EU trains are 50% off for kids up to 12!

That's a good point. North American plates don't have a uniform state/province marker like European plates do.

I don't mind the special designs, especially the ones that fund some good cause. But it should be a purely administrative thing, the legislature should spend exactly zero second debating the merits of a new special design.

Damn... In addition to quality of life, it sounds like a terrible hazard in case of fire.

Wait, I've always thought that windowless bedrooms were illegal? Are these really common here?
Now that I think of it, my wife's first apartment had one of these... do they get away with it by not calling it a bedroom or similar trick?

Even though he's talking about men, I have a feeling he's not referring to dad jokes.

Oh this one I actually believe. He just didn't say how many taxpayers and how many billions they already have in the bank.

I grew up in France so I was very used to high-speed rail at decent frequencies, and yet the Shinkansen blew my mind. Splurge for a first-class Japan Rail Pass if you can afford it and you're going to have a blast! π

CafΓ© Presse was hands-down the best French restaurant in town, with the authentic vibes of a French brasserie. Most other places are too stuffy.
I miss sitting at the bar, ordering a croque-madame, fries and a Monaco, with French football playing on the tiny TV at the corner. β½

Putting that cap on our vent and patching the drywall that was cut to make room for the hose was honestly the most satisfying part of installing our new heat pump dryer π

God bless his soul for his sacrifice π our countries truly have an eternal debt with each other. The small, hateful men at the top of our government will not change this fact.

Haha they do have a point. What I can tell you is that Americans were still very much welcome in France during the Iraq War, which was arguably the lowest point of French-American relations (until now). People understood that you were not Bush then, and will understand that you're not Trump now.

Fun! Which countries are you visiting? I would expect most people to still be friendly to Americans, at least the ones who are not wearing a MAGA hat. Common courtesy and speaking a few words of the local language (even just hello, thank you, goodbye) will go a long way.

Another option is Iceland. My wife went on her own and saw northern lights there. Also direct flights from Seattle with Icelandair.

We went to Fairbanks a few years ago and loved it. Alaska flies direct from Seattle. Northern lights are always a bit of luck but September/October and February/March are supposed to be the best times. You can also do a day trip to Denali, try dog sledding, meet reindeers... very fun trip.

Now the PM in me can't help thinking that the real victory will be when social housing is actually built and people are starting to move in π
and we should offer all our support to SSH as they work towards this goal. But it's a story for tomorrow and organizers deserve their celebration tonight! π

We've already seen the same thing unfold in the tech world post-Twitter. A bunch of tech leaders were waiting on the sidelines to see if Musk could get away with brutal layoffs, broad RTO mandates, decreased pay and benefits... when they saw that he faced virtually no consequences, they joined in.

Thank you! I will take credit for pushing the team to prioritize the work given the rise of Bluesky, but I am not with Feedly anymore as of a few weeks ago, so I can't take credit for the launch π
great work from the team though!

As unqualified and harmful as they are, RFK and Gabbard are bound to be just pawns. Their main job will be to sign the orders that have been written for them by Vaught and the other architects of that nefarious plan.

I contacted our WA senators to ask them to fight back, especially @cantwell.senate.gov who's been so disappointing so far (she voted yes to confirm most nominees).
It sounds small but enough people pestered senators over the past few days that some of them seem to finally start fighting back today.

I'm very frustrated by our Democratic elected officials in both chambers of Congress (hello @cantwell.senate.gov π please stop confirming terrible nominees, your WA constituents want you to fight against them) but most Democratic governors and state AGs seem to do their part so far.

And to your point, yes it's weird / broken / whatever we want to call it. The tech industry as a whole (not just design) has become very hostile to junior folks for various reasons (companies optimizing for the short term, manager roles being devalued, remote working, AI, among others).
comment in response to

I don't think it's so much that folks are not willing to teach but more that their management is not willing to let them carve 10% of their working time to mentor/teach (or management is not willing to spend *any* money on hiring junior folks if they can't deliver value right this minute).

The number of cars in Seattle without a license plate (or with that device that obscures the plate) is unbelievable. Enforcing the basic rules of the road (blocking the box is another of my pet peeves) would fund our city budget more reliably than cutting library hours.

For uninsured folks, it likely depends state by state. For example, WA seems to have a robust program (most common vaccines only though). doh.wa.gov/public-healt...
