Me, yelling in bed: "WHAT A PLAY!"

2 additional radiosonde sites are temporarily suspending launches, while 6 others are reducing to one launch a day. 14 out of 83 sites now have partial or no launches. The more radiosondes are reduced or suspended, the more noticeable the forecast skill reduction becomes.

The tribute to Greg Gumbel to start tournament coverage on CBS was very good.

This week's Weather Rewind focused on a ridiculous stretch of warm temperatures in March 2012 (the warmest March on record) when seven straight days set new records. It was pretty glorious, and also a sign of heat and drought to come that year: www.kcrg.com/video/2025/0...

Distinctly tan hue to the moon right now...gotta be dust blowing in around this storm?

I was eight when this tornado ripped the door off our farmhouse, and through the hole I watched it obliterate two neighboring homes. This event helped lead me to a career in emergency management and is told in my upcoming second book about Iowa farm life in the 1980s. #greysky #writerscommunity

Among the things that have me thinking about December 15, 2021 this week, the extreme threat for fires in the Plains is one of them. People reported smelling smoke behind the squall line that night, coming from blazes states away.

This outbreak and its impact on Worthington was the subject of this week's Weather Rewind: www.kcrg.com/video/2025/0...

Was watching this in the newsroom following the St. Patrick's parade with a bunch of other people. The room went crazy.

Underrated moment from that night: Fred Hoiberg being sick and looking like death warmed over on the sidelines of a Nebraska game (it turned out to not be COVID). It really did feel like everything was falling apart. And it was! Bad times.

Fran McCaffery saved the Iowa men's basketball team from sliding into (semi?) permanent irrelevance when he took over. That sounds like a low bar, but it was critical.

Large storm system possible toward Friday, depending on various model variations. Devil is in the details, but let's track the CSU machine learning severe probabilities as we get closer. This was yesterday's, at day 8:

Catching up on the Valparaiso men's basketball team in their conference tourney. A player named All Wright just made a basket. I can get behind that kind of name.

Check out the drift Eric Weber has NW of Audubon. His son Brody is standing in front of it. He's 6'5"!! #iowa #iawx #desmoines #blizzard

This was the topic of this week's Weather Rewind, of course: www.kcrg.com/video/2025/0...

An overview of tornado warning operations at NWS Lincoln, IL. It takes a lot more than one person watching the radar and issuing warnings

Good one tonight.

First storm of the year 🥳

Fun!

National Blend of Models struggling mightily on temperatures with this switch to warm/melting snow regime. Friday's 13z edition for reference. On track for 10+ degree misses for highs within 60-84 hours.

Here's a weird thing that aired on TV in 1993, when Iowa was at the peak of Tom and Roseanne-mania (they divorced a year later). Enjoy!

Weather Rewind this week looked back to another snowy Valentine's Day, when several inches of snow fell in 1990. At the time, it was the biggest storm of the season to date...a lot like how Wednesday's storm played out here this week! www.kcrg.com/video/2025/0...

We've been doing this show on streaming since September, and I think we've grown it into something that's really pretty solid. Making the jump to the main channel will make the show even better, and I'm exciting to continue to be a big part of it.

Hanging on to every computer model run throughout the day and the various wobbles in precipitation amount and location makes for a stressful run-up to a winter storm. The forecast is figuratively put to bed and I feel...okay about it. And now we will find out.

Here's our first run at the forecast for Wednesday's storm system. The heaviest snow of the season to date is looking pretty likely around here. Changes are possible, so stick around. Details: www.kcrg.com/2025/02/11/l...

They should just put a bunch of destructible props and fake lamp posts out for Philly fans to destroy in celebration, like a rage room.
