As someone who has watched the evolution of the Web from Netscape on, let me be the first to say: Algorithms are great - you should always trust them and they never get anything wrong.

trillion dollar industry that will revolutionize everything

Musk called DOGE “maximally transparent,” but it has refused to release info about its spending and operations — including the names of its employees. Thankfully, @propublica.org has identified 46 of them, including 12 new names just added to the list today.

A reminder, from February 25th, 2022:

1. OSHA has ordered the digital and physical destruction of 18 publications on workplace safety practices, according to an email obtained by Popular Information. The email says the publications have been removed from the web and tells staff that physical copies should be "disposed of or recycled"

The Trump official currently dismantling USAID was caught in a secret meeting with a group of pro-Russian separatists in the Balkans. Those he met with are under American sanctions for trying to restart the Bosnian war in the name of Christian nationalism. 1/

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

New, from me: DOGE's mass firings of probationary employees are a masterclass in how not to manage public organizations. They don’t have a plan to fix what they are breaking because they don’t understand or care about the damage they are doing. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/doge-misma...

"nobody even knows where the [national debt] money went and you’re not allowed to ask." Huh? Its all public record at OMB, CBO, & Treasury websites, which I've also used to publish 600 reports, articles, & chart books specifying where all the money went. You can log off Twitter and go look it up!

Goddammit RIP @realbiffwiff.bsky.social 😥

National Nuclear Security Administration officials are attempting to notify some employees who had been let go that they are now due to be reinstated — but they're struggling to find them because they don't have their new contact information. nbcnews.to/4104StF

what have you been living under a rock or something? friend who's secretly bugs: wh– no. no way man. did someone tell you that

This kind of stuff can’t be said loudly enough. Yes, governments can be wasteful and corrupt; so can private entities. But many people are out there trying to do good work.

This comment on r/fednews really stood out to me. Trump and Musk want people to think they're firing do-nothing "bureaucrats," but they're really getting rid of people dedicated to serving this country and keeping it operational. I hope these stories get told.

💯

This news truly puts my heart in a blender.

Any dictionary can be a pocket dictionary with big enough pants.

shame... celebrate all you want but this kind of vandalism is never acceptable

Trump and Elon Musk all but dismantled USAID. It took them less than a month. It's an unprecedented test of the checks and balances at the heart of the American system of government. The must-read inside story, from @annamaria.bsky.social and Brett Murphy. www.propublica.org/article/usai...

Interestingly, in Loper Bright vs Raimondo, the conservative majority on SCOTUS ruled just last year that the judiciary can in fact overrule regulatory decisions made by the executive branch especially when those decisions are not specified by Congress.

RIP, Dick Jauron, who coached Packers defensive backs under Forrest Gregg, Lindy Infante and Mike Holmgren from 1986 to 1994. As a head coach, his Bears, Lions and Bills teams went 3-9 against the Packers from 1999 to 2009.

God bless @propublica.org projects.propublica.org/elon-musk-do...

Buckle up everyone this is going to be a LONG thread but if you are a current Fed you are going to want to bookmark it because it’s the roadmap for what’s coming. #SaveUSAID #SaveAmerica 1/

NEW: White House requested a list of CIA employees as part of efforts to shrink the federal government. The list, which included partial names, was sent in an unclassified email. David Sanger and I report: www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/u...

1/My colleagues & I have been covering Trump & Musk’s targeting of USAID from the start. We’ve heard rumblings of an executive order shifting a much-shrunken version of USAID under State. Dem lawmakers are furious, saying such a move is illegal w/out Congress’ consent. My guess is Trump team is …

1/ Musk seeking control over nerve systems of the federal government. As someone who spent a decade studying how centralized information systems are used for coercion this is a five alarm fire. We need to name it, identify risks, and seek to mitigate their impacts. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

“'They seem to want Treasury to be the chokepoint on payments, and that’s unprecedented,' the person added, emphasizing that it is not the bureau’s role to decide which payments to make — it is 'just to make the f-ing payments.'"

From @mmasnick.bsky.social: a good overview of the different ways Musk has been grabbing control over the different data/financial/contracting systems of government, concluding with this: www.techdirt.com/2025/01/31/e...

NEW: Sources tell my office that Treasury Secretary Bessent has granted DOGE *full* access to this system. Social Security and Medicare benefits, grants, payments to government contractors, including those that compete directly with Musk's own companies. All of it.

Vaccines and immunization fact sheets you can't find on CDC website anymore are archived at the link below. May be helpful to bookmark this for future reference. www.immunize.org/vaccines/vis...

The digital infrastructure of the United States Government is both critical and fragile. Many of us who work in digital government have been trying to figure out what’s going on as norms and protocols are being subverted — Thread on some of what we know so far:

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

So if I’m understanding today correctly, the world’s richest person Elon Musk, whom no one elected, is taking over federal payment systems and employee data while the federal employees who investigate and prosecute public corruption are being fired en masse.

I hope people see how truly alarming this is: 1. Musk's team, who may not even be US govt employees yet, have complete access to OPM's databases of PII on federal employees and have locked out career employees 2. Musk's people trying to do same with THE US TREASURY MASTER PAYMENT SYSTEM 🚨

Absolute insanity. www.reuters.com/world/us/mus...

Google spent billions of dollars on this shit.

Reporters: Please stop calling things DEI that are not DEI. This is only cementing the propaganda being used to legitimize the dismantling of all types of initiatives that are not DEI as well as legitimize efforts to end civil rights enforcement. Be specific with your language. Be accurate.

A shortened Q&A on my untraditional path to my hometown newspaper. 📰

I spent four years investigating these sorts of claims. Children aren’t being taught they’re inherently victims or oppressors. Teachers aren’t leading kids to change genders. Instead these claims are used as a pretext to sanitize history curricula and impose conservative Christian ideas in schools

As the Trump administration pushes forward on downsizing the federal government, our recent explainer has stats on: –the current and historical number of federal workers –their geographic location –demographics –job descriptions –average pay –average tenure –civil service protections –more
