The May 15th incident, which basically plunged Japan into effective military dictatorship. In the same vein, the assassination of Shinzo Abe a couple of years ago. On the flip side, the murder of MLK and Fred Hampton did have exactly the effect the FBI was aiming for.

Someone should have a conversation with Trump about whether or not that would be constitutional.

And even if it was 0%, WHO CARES??? A toilet's a toilet and it's none of your damn business what I've got between my legs. Hard pill to swallow: we have gender-separated bathrooms for exactly the same reason Saudi Arabia has gender-separated dining rooms.

I see crime as similar to war. It's a form of commerce where people really DO NOT want to receive your product or service and will pay you to stop giving it to them, or pay someone else to make you stop.

It's interesting that after all these decades we still have no meaningful economic model for criminal activity. We don't account for it in models and make no attempt to prove quantify its impact or the factors that cause it.

I did not know that. Thanks!

See, they have an actual REASON now. That's technically a hostile act. They should respond accordingly. Come on, Zelenski! You owe us one!

I'm not. America has been ruled by horrible people since my ancestors first got here. It's honestly kind of refreshing to have so many people be on the same page on this for once.

It's definitely plausible. IF they had approached him, he is absolutely the kind of person who would have folded. And if the KGB knew anything about him at all, they would have tried at least once. It's really just a question of whether or not they got around to it.

Pretty sure there's a whole subclass of people who operate on exactly that principle.

That's per DAY, by the way. Incase I didn't make that clear.

Sysadmin here. From time to time, just out of curiosity, I check on the login attempt history for users in my company. Yesterday, I checked my boss' account to see how many failed logins were attempted, and from where. 2,457 attempts. Been like this for years.

It turns out the billionaire class doesn't like it when other billionaires fuck up the entire economy just to soothe their own fragile egos. Whoda thunk?

Exactly.

Dumb to do it quietly. That brief exchange with Janet Mills was QUITE revealing, but four other governors talking over him and a few utterances of "Go fuck yourself, Donald" wouldn't have been unappreciated.

Individual acts of defiance build a collective wall of resistance

This is likely to end with a mayor or a state senator with a big stack of really impressive sounding military honors whipping out a .45 in the middle of a press conference.

To be sure: what they actually understand is LANGUAGE. If you ask it to summarize an article, it will. If you ask it to tell you the difference between any two articles, on a surface level, it will. It understands what words mean and how grammar works and how we humans use them... and that's IT.

It's a soldier's duty to fight when called, but nobody worth talking to ignores the effect that low morale can have on an army. Put another way: duty is a job description, not a motivator. If you cannot convince your men to do their duty, that's a failure of leadership, not a failure of the army.

I mean, sort of? When you live with other people who can snap you out of it for ordinary self care and maintenance? Not so much when you live alone and just realize you spent like 20 hours straight writing a python program for the tsiolkovsky rocket equation for, like, no real reason.

Autistic people like me who get caught up doing something really specific and detail oriented for hours and then get up to go to the bathroom at 11pm and suddenly wonder why my legs are shaking. "Oh. Right. Because I started doing THIS instead of breakfast."

Think of the viral advertising. "Where you wanna eat?" "Dees nuts." "Oh, ha ha. Seriously, were we goin?" "Dees nuts. I just told you." "Dude..." "I got a craving for Dee's Nuts, okay? Let's GO!"

It's a language model. It's not designed to say things that ARE correct, it's designed to say things that SOUND correct. It's done its job if you look at its output and say "Yup, that is definitely a research paper."

I think it's simpler than that: people don't know the difference between capitalism and commerce. Even under socialism, we will have commerce. What we will/should not have is an entire class of ppl whose entire reason to exist is to gather the wealth produced by labor and hoard it for themselves.

Free speech is free speech, innit? If the President can talk about the people HE wants to kill, it is only fitting and proper we get to talk about returning the favor. OTOH, if we are respecting the government's monopoly on violence, it may be fitting that we suggest the GOVERNMENT should kill him.

"Hold your fire until you see the whites of their eyes" is sometimes good advice, but suppressing fire can be helpful in other ways, even if it's just to make your enemy duck and/or waste ammo firing back. We are temporarily fortunate that this remains a metaphor.

Or former wrestler. Fun fact: the best, scariest, and most annoying opponents I ever had on the HS wrestling team were, in fact, gymnasts. Only reason I know this is because I had to compete against them AS a gymnast the very next season and it was always "Oh, THIS motherfucker again..."

AOC was elevated to fame because she has proposed policies and beliefs most people consider populist and timely, often to the chagrin of democratic leadership. And here you are using "People only like her because she's pretty" to defend Pelosi arranging cushy jobs for one of her loyalists.

And nobody outside of his own district knows his name, or who he is, or what he does, or why he matters. He's been elevated to a position of leadership and authority... as a faceless bureaucrat who just wants to keep the trains running on time. That's the kind of leadership Pelosi believes in.

Maybe have some fun with it and show that even a dystopia can always, ALWAYS, find a way to get worse?
