My hygienist is always saying "now, I know insurance won't cover the treatment, do you still consent?" And my response is always "I mean, the treatment itself gives me the sensory ick, but yes, please give me the preventative medicine insurance *should* be covering thank you."

My heart and soul are already patchwork kintsungi masterpieces from the losses I have personally suffered. There isn’t enough golden glue to repair me if I break again.

With the news that is coming out from Israel today, I don’t know if I can light that 4th candle anymore. I am afraid that lighting the wick will crack my broken heart into innumerable pieces. The prayers that were so firmly answered NO can shatter me beyond repair.

It was easy, I had that wee silver candlestick, and if it didn’t actually help it sure couldn’t hurt.
So for the last year and a half I have been lighting 4 candles, not 3. I have been hoping and praying that the hostages would come home intact in body (if never in soul) and that I could stop.

I don’t normally do these sorts of things. I wasn’t part of groups that gathered to recite תהלים (psalms) as prayer. I’ve never said names while separating the dough called חלה or when dunking in the מקווה. As said elsewhere, I am a praxis Jew. But adding another candle called to me.

In the middle of October 2023, when so little was known about the hostages and how many lay dead across the Gaza envelope, someone had the idea to add one more candle to the number you normally light (some people only ever light 2 no matter the size of their family) as a prayer to bring them home.

Our family never did get bigger than 3, and that is what it is. So for more than 9 years I lit three candles when candle lighting was called for. In hotel bathrooms, rented apartments & townhomes in two countries, AirBnBs and finally in our own house. Three candles for the three family members.

When I got married, I inherited one of my great grandmother’s three branched silver candelabra (she had two, my sister has the other). I was also given a tiny candlestick when Monster was born, but I preferred to light only in the candelabra due to sentiment.

If your response, as a pundit, to the moment is to crow about moral rectitude and use it to smear the only serious chance of any opposition to fascists from those in power, you're only demonstrating you don't really care about those at risk.

Clearly your Local Sports Team was not good enough at The Game They Play to make it to The Biggest Game Of The Year and are not last minute stocking up on snacks.

Our household is a “your fandom is not my fandom, but your fandom is OK” household. We do not ourselves Super Bowl, but it is fine for other folks.
Oddly enough, a Super Bowl party was the contrivance for my engagement, so we observe that Sunday as the anniversary of same, regardless of date.

Oh, I know! I bought some amazing rose petal gin in Vancouver and I want to see what kinds of cocktails it makes first.

I have the Hadju from an NYC trip, but no Luxardo. I think you can use it for Negronis though.

I know that I can probably half compensate for the stimulants with caffeine and nicotine (no tar, I promise, but it does work). But I cannot make my brain processes serotonin properly without chemical help that you can’t just buy at the grocery store.
