This administration is no longer serious nor credible. What a shame.

"Avoid harm" is one of the first rule of the computing code of ethics. "Contribute to society and well being", "be honest and trustworthy", "be fair and do not discriminate" are the other top rules that go along with it. www.acm.org/code-of-ethics

Interesting. Amazon took the same path and while before I could easily find good products I was expecting there, now I'm overwhelmed with unexpected cheap kitsch offerings and end up buying somewhere else. This everything-platform approach has a terrible effect on image and brand loyalty

"We will not stand by as the dignity, safety and humanity of our trans siblings are debated, delayed or denied” - full support!

This is an example of integrity and courage! Thanks for sharing the lucid analysis of the ideological takeover of US science & knowledge, which is really frightening: It took so long to establish solid and trustable bodies, and it went so fast to undermine all the past efforts...

From what I understood (but I'm not a lawyer), the recent WordPress case (techcrunch.com/2025/01/12/w...) shows another risk: a competitor uses your product and becomes dominant, eating your market share on services (I do not take position on the way they're trying to fight it) you were counting on

There are competitive risks: others may use your product without development costs + with economies of scale. This has to be balanced with significant open source opportunities. What "defeated" are you looking for: acquired by larger corp? outperformed by competitive products? covert IP stealing?

With monetization, do you specifically mean advertising? Because tech in itself seems to get cheaper and cheaper

There's a simpler solution to this issue. Just avoid this place. There are plenty of other countries to discover.

Courage and determination. Looks like a modern hero to me.

There's this nice thing called GDPR. It could be a good start!

Again a great and inspiring post from our new lead philosopher! Interestingly, some of these branches unfold by themselves and lead to a natural path, whereas others require tough choices.

The intention is to frighten media companies. This is probably only a first step. The next might be to prevent diversity in the movies itself, and later to force ("strongly suggest") inclusion of far-right narratives in the movies to flood the world with this insane ideology.

Indeed. Let's look for example at the world wide web, which was born in a European research facility (CERN) and for which the US attracted the talent which led to the development we all know. Full story in Tim Berner Lee's "Weaving the web".

comment in response to post
Maybe the French government shall include in public procurement a questionnaire requiring US companies and their local subsidiaries to confirm that they comply worldwide with human rights, are aligned with european values, and promote diversity and inclusion?

Just curious: if the federal level gets dismantled, wouldn't the "United States of America" just become the "States of America" in absence of the common interest?

If seing this as a media bias reinsures you, fine. But I live on the other side of the Atlantic and can ensure you that this is a real concern here. It's not political, it's sound business risk management. And once the trust is lost, it might take years to the US digital industries to win it back.

We all know that most of them won't make six zeros or larger. Moreover, the world is not static: A lot of US IT businesses flourish today because customers abroad trust the US. What will happen, once foreign friends start to doubt and the trust is gone?
comment in response to post
In the current context, why would highly talented foreign experts still want to come over to the US, even if their candidate employer would pay for the visa? To live in constant fear of accidentally being detained and deported by ICE?

That is very good news. My mom was saddened in her online experience at 80+, as targeted adds went constantly on proposing her funeral services and other bothering things when one just want to enjoy the remaining life. Turned it off for her wherever I could.
