Friend of the Show Justin Reich called us from the North Woods, to give us an update on his 700 mile canoe trip. Bald eagles, river otters, and rustic hotels. uppermiddlebrow.com/2025/05/22/d...

Learned in my 40s: When I need coins for the laundry, I don't have to go to the gas station and try to get the clerk to change 1$ bills. Nor do I have to bike to the carwash and use the change machine when the manager isn't looking. I can simply go to the bank, and withdraw cash in quarters.

I used a whiteboard tool to visually track the status of various lobes and nodes of projects I'm working on, and it revealed where I stand with a certain draft due in 3 weeks.

This is a big reversal.

In which an avuncular Dutchman uses a mixtures of science and Catholicism to defeat an undead sex offender. uppermiddlebrow.com/2025/04/28/e...

What is this s--t? If G-d wanted our water to fall from the sky, he wouldn't have given us the Sacramento, American, and Colorado rivers. #LARain

Save the date! Ripley watch party, May 19th.

Fun fact, California Humanities did NOT fund my proposal do to a series of radio documentaries about the history and culture of California's surfing spots. I feel like this would be an especially good idea now. www.picketfencemedia.com/sanclementet...

#Dracula is great, but Victorians could get a bit whingey.

"I'm so overwhelmed by the horrific horror of the horrorness of the horriciness" Dukes' exxagerated take on 19th century Gothic horror melodramatic prose.

Now playing, Dracula. Not a movie, the 1897 book.

They spent all their time thinking about if they COULD. I wonder if they spent any time thinking about if they SHOULD. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solu...

With no vaccines the country fell apart. Until hope arose from America's nudist camps, shouting "Sunlight is the best disinfectant!" His name was Progress and all--doctors, businessmen, and laborers, engineers, Zeppelin passengers, and autogyro pilots--followed him boldly into Our New Nudist Future!

New ep: I Made a Friend and Now He's Dead Liliana Calvani's Ripley's Game

Coming soon: Ripley's Game (2002). We don't think Breaking Bad would exist without this film.

Let's apply some critical thinking to the timing of these two news stories:

It's interesting to me that the "top banker" in the Financial Times story who allegedly said this insisted on anonymity. If you're liberated, why not tell the world who you are?

Ok we are going to do a Val Kilmer film this weekend. I just checked, but there’s not a lot of stuff of his streaming right now. However, Amazon will typically pick up a lot of films when things like this happen so everybody sit tight and I’ll announce as soon as possible. #HATM

Kale in March.

Ripley Underground (2005) might be only the 5th best Tom Ripley Film, but that doesn't mean it's bad. We enjoy the early oughties crime romp with art forgeries, impersonation, and Willem Dafoe defending the honor of Dayton.

Proud of journalists & outlets still standing up to power in the face of threats while Big Law, corporations, and other institutions capitulate: Wired, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone, Miami Herald, Techdirt, Marisa Kabas, the Unpoulist, ProPublica, MSNBC. (Feel free to add others in replies)

George Foreman 1949-2025 Most of us would be content to be a boxing champion OR a grilling magnate. George had to do both. (and one of them twice)

"Hey, you wanna come over to my neo-Classical mansion this weekend and garotte some gangsters?"

Dennis Hopper's Tom Ripley is... memorable. We think he'd be a good choice for the long lost comedic Ripley movie "Weekend at Ripleys". www.youtube.com/shorts/eC1Lz...

The second of the Ripley Films.

Dukes enjoys the pacing of #PurpleNoon, the first Tom Ripley movie, made in 1960. Bagg finds it ponderous, and we discuss why.

Angelenos are funny about the rain. Despite the ever present need for water, a little rain makes them run for cover. I present as evidence these four sparrows, hiding under my porch roof, and complaining about the weather.

We begin our six part "Ripley En Filmes" series with the lush and sensual #PurpleNoon aka #PleinSoleil by #ReneClement starring the great #AlainDelon in his first major picture.

Justin Reich joins us to talk about what #TedChiang's #Exhalation tells us about childhood development.

WE believe these were created by Francois Sanchez, in Grenoble France, but I'm not sure. But more, please.
