Definitely! That's probably why the numbers are so variable. A simple way to track it is that ponds have vegetation throughout, due to sunlight, and lakes only have it at the edges.

I find it fascinating that the definition of ponds versus lakes I used to teach isn't referenced here. In Maine, I taught that a "pond" was shallow enough to allow sunlight to touch the bottom for a majority of the area, and a lake had a majority of "dark bottom".
