I really love this little Edwardian film. This short film from 1905 is called Pussy's Breakfast. 🫣 It features Estelle Roy de Menditte (1892-1988) and a cat. Algorithm-wise, it has an unfortunate title, but it's fascinating nonetheless. #Edwardian #history youtu.be/x2ZadzpwJZg?...

Could headlines please not just take for granted that Trump “is doing” stuff he has no legal authority to do just because he said so? Because the implication to the reader is that he can in fact legitimately do these things.

I celebrate the 80% of Germans who did not vote for the far right. Do not make 19.6% of German voters into "the" German people (again). "The" German people don't exist! The German population is diverse and divided, but voted overwhelmingly for liberal democratic parties. #BTW25 #GermanElection

Someone needs to explain ecological fallacy to journalists covering the German election: Centre-left down, Radical Right up DOES NOT mean voters switched from centre-left to radical right! Look at the voter flows: SPD and Green vote fragmented, and AfD mainly won votes from CDU and non-voters

Quite useful 👇🏼

confession: when I (as a runner) encounter pedestrians who aren’t paying attention in the Ethniko Kipo here in Athens, I snap at them in German

If you've ever used the Polity data, read this from Monty Marshall. tl;dr Polity is coding recent US events as an executive self-coup and an adverse regime change.

Teaching Session 1 of my study abroad course “Democracy in Theory & Practice” today in Athens. What impulses make democracy more likely to emerge? What’s the record of agreement on who gets to participate? Why might even the self-interested favor it? 1/2

German medium @taz.de reports that almost 1 million people have demonstrated against the far right in Germany this year!

In my self-defense classes I focus on how most people are socially conditioned to follow the norms of a civilized, polite society — and there is a MENTAL SHIFT required to use violence to defend from violence. I'm reminded of this while watching our elected officials dithering and delaying. 1/

Tomorrow I embark on my first study abroad program, as the faculty member in residence. I packed last Saturday (yup, eager). We're bringing Cat Nibbler. Cat Madeleine Albright will stay behind to mind the house. Pictured: Cat (not Nibbler) in Athens, December 2023.

It's quite a time to be a specialist in German politics while residing in the U.S. Lots to process. If you have a bigger attention span than mine this week, check out my book about how "left" and "right" are the wrong terms for understanding the present moment. 1/2 tupress.temple.edu/books/beyond...

If you're a scientist that serves on an NSF panel that got cancelled today, I'd love to talk to you about it for an NPR story. DM, email or reach out on signal.

Fantastic work by fantastic scholars here. Check it out!

I love and support public libraries & librarians! 💗📚

I initially misread that as “embrace the cringe.” So I think that, to me, the new year means doubling down on the idea that discomfort isn’t bad. Complacency is bad. But not discomfort.
