the main reason i think this is because i really really really want it to be true

im speaking generally rather than about you specifically. i think your reasoning is fine. it's good to be aware of how much energy AI uses. im just saying it's also possible to reasonably weigh that against other things and that gets distorted by the way some people talk about it

for the same reasons we're all very critical of zuckerberg but aren't calling regular people who like facebook or instagram Fascist Collabrators Who Hate The Environment and Love Pedophiles or whatever

that's reasonable. but there are definitely people who think all (generative) AI is the problem, and they're wrong. the criticism should be levied at execs like sam altman who are creating and distributing the tech irresponsibly, rather than individuals who use it and think it's fun and interesting

like the person you were replying to initially wasn't talking about mass-producing garbage with AI, they were talking about using it in a pretty deliberate way. the climate argument is fair when we're talking abt tech companies shoving it down people's throats, but not in any and all use cases

i agree that it being forced onto people is a concern and it makes sense that the energy expenditure issue is more a problem of scale than like. using it 1 time. it just feels a bit like selective outrage to be upset about AI but not any other extremely resource-intensive digital hobby

generating a single image with AI is typically far less energy-intensive (and therefore more sustainable) than spending 20 hours drawing digitally in photoshop. and like i think there is inherent value in actually drawing vs. generating images. but it's not necessarily better for the environment

im not an AI superfan like you seem to be (?), i have criticisms of it, but it's weird how dishonest this aspect of the discourse gets. objectively, if you stream netflix or play video games most days you're emitting wayyy more carbon than someone using midjourney a few times a week.

and our economic structure incentivizes using AI to produce generic unrefined slop over embracing its unique qualities to create art that is thoughtful and interesting 2/2

you're getting dogpiled but i think this is worth discussing. not sure i agree that prompt-engineering alone can ever be transformative enough to claim authorship, but i do think AI can be used as part of the creative process for making interesting art. unfortunately 99% of AI art is hot garbage 1/2

in the bear he plays a brooding, mysterious, highly skilled chef and he has muscles and tattoos. it's very much about the aura of the character

i have to say i heard this argument a lot when i was 15 and arguing online with libertarians was a top 5 hobby for me, and even back then i thought it was the dumbest shit ever
