Sadly we probably will never know his motivation. I was not even sure this is a real occurrence but I did confirm it being reported elsewhere.

Also it is possible to survive being shot.

It appears he may have been playing "Russian Roulette" whereby not all chambers of a revolver are loaded with viable ammunition thereby creating a risk that the trigger pull will cause a discharge but not guaranting it.
