Our results suggest that the persuasiveness of the biomedical visual representation provided by a brain scan could influence how they perceive their own condition and that it could influence their pain experience.

Some late additions to this 🧵 What did we find? - Over 90% were open to using brain imaging for dx, prediction, and tx decision-making - Over half felt that a brain scan would give them ⬆️ confidence in their dx and tx plans & that healthcare providers would be more likely to believe them ...

There is emerging research which is focused on identifying neuroimaing (or rather, brain-based) biomarkers for chronic pain. The research is still early days and detecting a reliable clinically useful biomarker remains elusive. A goal is to better predict and diagnose chronic pain.
