It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Three things that make the U.S. the envy of the world: 1) Professionalized military with strong norm of civilian control 2) Higher education and cutting-edge scientific research 3) Ability to welcome immigrants and attract the “best and the brightest” All three are under threat.

This is going to go on at many universities - the uncertainty will lead to fewer graduate programs. It will hobble scientific research which appears to be the goal.

New research alert on GOP women in Congress from the great @daniellethomsen.bsky.social and the great, but not on Bluesky, Michele Swers. (Come on, Michele!!) www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

CAWP's Kelly Dittmar in @motherjones.com.

Now seems like as good a time as any to remind people that Donald Trump picked, as Secretary of Transportation, a former contestant on MTV's The Real World.

📣 Out on #FirstView 📣 Michele Swers & @daniellethomsen.bsky.social examine the (co)sponsorship of bills by Republican women to understand which of types of policies they propose move through the legislative process. 🌟Available #OpenAccess🌟 polisky gendersky https://buff.ly/4h3qo7w

New 2024 data: Over 50% of GOP fundraising now comes from just 100 mega-donors. Trump’s embrace of the billionaire class—and their embrace of him—will only supercharge this trend.

The Republican scheme to place right-wing conditions on disaster assistance to California wildfire victims is unacceptable. It’s not happening.

New paper with Ryan Mundy on the advantage of *candidate* wealth in US elections. Our rich Congress comes from rich candidates: they raise far more early money and especially more large-dollar donations, scare off competitors, and are more likely to be elected. Link below. @ryanmundy.bsky.social

I’m excited to share DIME v4.0 is live! This release covers through the 2024 cycle and contains records for 850M+ itemized political contributions and ideological scores for millions of candidates, PACs, and donors. stanford.io/3DJDCYm

God bless @sarahlongwell25.bsky.social

you know i don’t pay much attention to musk but this is…completely unhinged. like, if someone said this to you in person you’d be speaking to their family about how they need to get help

Black disfranchisement changed state legislative roll call voting to enable the solid south. In states with partisan divides, it led to shifts away from Republican records. In states dominated by Democrats, it led to shifts toward an agrarian, reform wing onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

In the latest @goodauth.bsky.social podcast, @tesler.bsky.social and I talk about the 2024 election -- what we can learn from polls, whether people's opinions about Biden and Trump could change, the "racial realignment," and much more. Check it out: goodauthority.org/news/what-po...

5 of 6 GOP-appointed Supreme Court justices were confirmed by GOP-led Senates where the Dem minority had won more votes & represented more people than the GOP. 3 were also appointed by Trump, who lost the popular vote, & 2 more by Bush, who lost it for his 1st term www.dailykos.com/stories/2023...

Nothing has radicalized me on immigration more than graduate advising. We are bringing many of the most brilliant people on the planet here, paying to train them as cutting edge scholars, and then making it pointlessly difficult for them to stay here and use those skills to benefit society.

Excited to be sharing a new (working) paper that I've been working on for the last 2-3 years. "Partisan Disparities in the Use of Science in Policy" with @timlapira.bsky.social and Dashun Wang. osf.io/preprints/so... Some highlight results to follow

Polisky friends! With Kevin Kosar, Sean Theriault, and (most importantly) the Levin Center, I am hosting a workshop on research using a new database of congressional oversight reports in July. Read on to see if you'd be interested, and submit an abstract by 1/31. mailchi.mp/wayne/call-f...

Conservatism is becoming increasingly synonymous with Trumpism in the minds of GOP voters. First graph from new @goodauth.bsky.social piece: goodauthority.org/news/iowa-sh... Second graph from 538 piece back in June: fivethirtyeight.com/features/tru...

New pre-print w Mia Costa. We propose a new mechanism through which descriptive representation can influence policy: politicians with diff occupational backgrounds are more effective at persuading voters and peers to support policy in their areas of expertise. #polisky osf.io/preprints/os...

Much of the J6 discourse these days focuses on the fact that it was an assault on our democracy. But today, I'm mostly just thinking about how it was also an assault on real people who just showed up to work that day.

Watch this and tell me again January 6 was peaceful and not an insurrection. www.nbcnews.com/politics/jus... Three years ago, the President inspired this madness. He has about a 40% probability of returning to the White House www.realclearpolitics.com/elections/be... Our democracy is at stake.

What retired Republican members of Congress really think … New @goodauth.bsky.social interview with @agtheodoridis.bsky.social about his recent @UMassPoll of former lawmakers. How the survey came about, what we’re learning, and what comes next! goodauthority.org/news/retired... 🌐

Amazing data collection and important new findings from CAWP on gender and campaign finance. Money is a key factor in elections today, and the report draws on an impressive new dataset to explore the donor gap and its implications across offices. cawp.rutgers.edu/donorgap

New Q3 fundraising numbers from CA-47. The money chase is close. Dave Min raised 300k in Q3 to Joanna Weiss's 400k (hers includes a 100k loan). Totals to date and cash on hand similar for both. Numbers suggest Min is still going strong.

Hi everyone! I wasn't very active on twitter but I'm going to try again here. I have a new book project on money in congressional elections, and most of my posts will likely be about campaign finance in American politics.
