Each study section takes about a week of a member’s time. The honorarium comes to less than minimum wage, but most of us do it because we care that good science gets done. The section I am on covers research on pathogen evolution and transmission — important questions on pathogens you’ve heard of.

While we're swapping, here's a one-page description of roughly when to use which type of colormap, screencapped from the Data Viz slides on larremorelab.github.io/slides/. Hope this is useful!

Here's a crack at it! Thanks for posting the data and calculations. And for the tip on Datawrapper. That's a nice tool!

😅 Apologies for being flippant! The red-blue "diverging" colormap across the US states threw me, as the values are sequential. During Datawrapper Step 3 (Visualize) they have some nice options for sequential colormaps.

That being said, the differences between what the tech actually does (currently) -vs- what the marketing sounds like are pretty bad in many cases. "AI solutions" gives me DeepCringe.

I suppose I'm more optimistic. IMO: - The LLMs introduced widely 2y ago are far worse than what we have today. I'm optimistic that we'll continue to see steady improvements. - I find my $20/mo for Claude to be money well spent! - Excited for more use cases as costs/energy fall by orders of mag.

The sell-off is not about the failure of AI to deliver, but actually that DeepSeek has managed to put something incredibly powerful together on a much smaller budget. It’s not an AI bubble popping, it’s a hardware cost bubble popping.

Ooooh and by a minute, too! Nice! I had a 9:43 on a Saturday in 2021. Need to focus up and get back to it!
