Arturo Obrego, a 77-year-old army veteran who hitchiked from Huntington Beach is going viral for getting hit with wooden baton by officers on horses and knocked down during today’s peaceful “No Kings” protest in DTLA. @TheGlutster ran into him at Union Station a couple of hours after the incident.

Fwiw arstechnica did a better write up of what he believes and it's more fucked up and more clearly based in eugenics He says it's miasma theory but in classic RFK Jr. fashion he defines it wrong. It would actually be better if he believed in miasma theory than his actual beliefs imho

Leonard Nimoy with son Adam on the set of STAR TREK. #FathersDay

Also see everything in media about the Columbine shooters that didn't mention they were white supremacists who wrote eugenicist screeds and praised Hitler and nazi Germany.

If you’re interested in some of the murkier parts of UK history catch The Mystery of Anthrax Island on the BBC iPlayer, available for a week. Gruinard, Dark Harvest and 300lbs of anthrax contaminated soil that have never been recovered.

Why is germ theory in the same air quotes as "miasma theory," I ask as a historian of medicine who is very very tired

In 2008 the security staff employed by Pride tried to gender police the toilets at Trafalgar Square. I warned them that if they did not desist, I would organise a mass sit in within ten minutes. They made the mistake of calling my bluff. Pride eventually apologised to trans people. #Toiletgate2008

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the strolling of the dudes They ambled up the street today before the crowds so few There wasnt much to see maybe an abram tank or two This parade is kinda mid Glory glory what a bullshit way to serve

From Kaz Gary: For Pride Month, Astrobites is interviewing one transgender astronomer every week. This week we interviewed Joy Bhattacharya, a PhD candidate at the Ohio State University! 🔭✨☄️ astrobites.org/2025/06/13/j...

This time-lapse video of protesters marching down Broadway in Oakland for No Kings Day gives an idea of how many people turned out today @sfchronicle.com

LMFAO 😂

It’s going to be a long battle, so you want to stay as healthy as you can for as long as you can. Stay in the fight. Protect yourself. Protect others. Mask up. #CovidIsNotOver #NoKings

Holy shit, New York! Here’s the full view. #NoKings #50501Movement

When López Alvarado tried to tell the officers that she was due June 17, she said they responded, “‘OK, your baby is going to be born here, but you’re from Mexico, right?’ And I told them no.” https://trib.al/ljia9Xs

Seriously, there were more people at our retro 80s concert in Margate this evening, that’s fucking embarrassing #nokings

When Tim Walz became Kamala Harris's running mate, progressives highlighted policies passed. It could not have been possible without Melissa Hortman. -Free school breakfast and lunch -Restoring voting rights for felons -Paid leave Great piece by @gracepanetta.bsky.social 19thnews.org/2025/06/rep-...

There's no more stark sign of fascism than people killing opposition politicians. The 1/6 pardons (or 6/1 in English money) were a clear signal of normalisation of politics by violence, rather than by the ballot box.

If you can't protest in person today (for whatever reason) here's a virtual rally you can join! 👇

Incredible reporting by @propublica.org. We are actively losing so much it's difficult to wrap one's head around it. projects.propublica.org/nih-cuts-res...

Have we entered the assassination of political enemies phase of America's descent into totalitarianism? Both are/were Democrats.

Last night, Capitol Police arrested roughly 60 veterans and their family members outside the U.S. Capitol. The group had gathered to hold a peaceful sit-in on the Capitol steps, but police intentionally set up a barrier of bike racks to prevent them from demonstrating.

And remember, this is a mission the Trump Administration wants to cancel.

Didn’t make a sign for today but will be representing my pediatrician colleagues. Thanks for all you do #nokings #iowacity

Some thoughts about the military parade in my hometown of Washington DC today -- specifically, the route. Military parades in DC are quite rare. But when they happen, they have always begun, symbolically and geographically, at the Capitol and moved outward. 1/

Fucking hell: “Minnesota state senator John Hoffman in Champlin and Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park were reportedly shot in their homes by a gunman impersonating a police officer.”

DISTURBING: ICE in Las Vegas threw teenagers against a wall, handcuffed them, scraped up their faces, bruised their arms — just for looking “illegal” while they were on their way home from a birthday party. This is what cowardice looks like with a badge.

Now I've had a chance to read Andrea Sella's article in @chemistryworld.com on why he returned his Royal Society Faraday Medal. I recommend that you read it too. It's inspiring, though inevitably also disturbing, in these troubled times. www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/why-...

They've now removed the transgender/all gender sign, and relocated the family changing room to through a solid wall (Kidding, it's to the left) Also their EV chargers are shit - avoid and press on to Chievely, much better provision.

Yuri Knorozov was the linguist who deciphered the Maya script in 1953. He listed his cat Asya as a co-author on his work but the editors always removed her. He always used this photo with Asya as his author photo and got angry whenever editors cropped her out.

Baroness Krishwar argued Article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights didn’t apply to Trans+ people just a day before Strasbourg affirmed it did 👇 https://www.wearequeeraf.com/ehrc-says-right-to-privacy-doesnt-apply-to-trans-people-as-european-court-says-it-does/

Amid news that BBC is trying to address "low trust" among Reform UK voters, Newswatch viewers challenge the amount of coverage Reform UK is getting. They think it's too much. Latest Newswatch BBC. 745am BBC Breakfast/BBC1 or iplayer after here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m...

It’s time for decriminalisation. 👇 Ask your MP to back @stellacreasy.bsky.social 's amendment to the Policing Bill. goodlaw.social/f2eef3

....meanwhile, in Chile....the 39-meter (128-feet) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) project is humming along. Note the white pickup truck in the upper left, for scale. Amazing.

Immensely significant - and worrying.

Under the proposed White House budget, the NASA Space Grant program would be eliminated. I was a NASA Space Grant recipient during my Masters—it funded my research on water on Mars. I then went on to work in science & mission ops on multiple NASA Mars missions immediately after graduation. (1/2)

I see a lot of people talking about how "we just need to explain science more to the public". The state Space Grant programs (one issued in each state) does incredible deep and wide outreach work - supporting education at every age and stage, nurturing science interest.

Treasury is developing new rules that would strip the tax-exempt status of colleges that are deemed to be using race in any way, aligning with the administration's executive orders. This flew under the radar yesterday with everything going on.
