Isn’t it worse than that? If I sell 100 boilers and pay the fine on the 6 heat pumps I should have sold, that’s £3,000. Or £30 per boiler.

It's great that local energy planning is becoming a thing. Scotland ahead of the curve with Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategies. But these need to graduate from technical exercises to central planks of mass deployment. Keep our homes warm as the country transitions out of gas.

Local energy planning is going to be really important. Instead of relying on households spontaneously making the switch, the change needs to be brought to them, street by street, making it straightforward for households and coordinating with the supply chain and infrastructure upgrades.

Is that feasible? What's the right policy mix? Support for upfront costs is non-negotiable, efforts to drive boiler manufacturers to make heat pumps are laudable (though now watered down and feel a bit limp), but what else is needed to boost and sustain growth? A PLAN. Or: rather, lots of plans!

So what does growth from here to 2028 look like? Here's a projection. Given we're at about 60,000, reaching 600,000 by 2028 needs a sustained growth rate of around *80%* per year.

Where do these numbers need to get to? The UK government a while ago set a target for 600,000 per year, a number they're sticking with. www.gov.uk/government/c...
