Unexpected like the Spanish inquisition?

Tldr: wholesale gas prices are very expensive and they set the UK electricity price.

That's also just untrue.
Long term stable nuclear power isn't that much more expensive than wind.
Yes, there's a premium for baseload. IMHO, it's worth it.

IMHO, we just need to build a ton of power with a good mix. Electrification will be very power hungry. We need all we can get at the lowest carbon and opportunity cost we can get away with.

Battery tech is getting better and better all the time. Proper seasonal storage is (you've guessed it) expensive but will get cheaper.

Expanding interconnecters is a good option as well, but you've guessed it. Expensive and possibly a security risk as anyone with a boat can sever the cables.

Short term(ish) grid storage is old tech, reliable but also expensive.

Hydrogen will likely be expensive as well.

Relies on gas mainly.

Scotland needs both.
We don't have sufficient storage or grid capacity to run at zero carbon if the wind isn't windy and the sun isn't shining.

Waste is a solved problem though. The UK government just don't want to do anything about it.
Yes, it costs more. That's the price of energy security and redundancy.
I'm not sure what you mean about security. Nuclear sites are bloody secure. You can't just wander on to one.

Electrifying the economy completely is going to take a boatload of power. Genuinely a lot.
Nuclear provides that baseload and energy security if wind doesn't blow and sun doesn't shine.

Darth Vader kills top staff 14 times a day, and people wonder why all their bases have single point failures designed in.

Murdoch should have been dislodged after Levenson. It's criminal they didn't enact much stronger legislation.
