It's James Clerk Maxwell's birthday, so please appreciate this unusually wholesome image of a natural scientist at work. He's the one at the back. (Jemima Wedderburn, 1843; www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-arti...)

Stevie makes a really good point about the point of a software engineering job (and I think the point is generalisable): Coding is the easy bit www.dontpanicblog.co.uk/2025/06/11/c...

Yep. Now Iran *will* build a nuclear bomb.

Sometimes the universe sends a sign to take a deep breath, exhale, and trust the powers of nature. I needed this today more than ever, and am guessing some of you might too.

If you see this, share a skeleton 🩻 Captain Keeta model from @bteamminis.bsky.social 💀 #miniatures #minipainting #art #painting #3dprinting #d&d #warhammer #zelda #majorasmask

I told you we’d be back

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 To celebrate Pride month, I'm giving away the charity model I had done for the Art for friends project! If you like the model and want to donate as well, feel free to do so 🙏

I think this is something I've missed when talking about why the far right values attacking trans people so highly. It's not just that it radicalises people and teaches them anti human rights arguments, it's that it literally cultivates authoritarian thinking theconversation.com/antagonism-t...

Finally, a shower built using the v-lifecycle. No agile showers for me any more, no sir.

Also. If that was as bad as it got for you? Having to mask? Having to ask your children to mask? Lucky you.

there should be a consumer electronics review site called does it beep dot com and the sole criteria it uses to judge kitchen appliances, cars, washing machines, etc is whether it beeps at you and if so how annoying the beeps are

Right now, nothing more punk rock than being kind. Also, this whole vibe is turning me into the biggest sweetie.

Go home, AI, you're so drunk you're hallucinating. (Actually, "drunk" and "hallucinating" are impossible because this class of AI isn't intelligent, it's just doing free word association across a huge statistical model of language: but it's a handy metaphor.)

The finished piece. Oil and acrylic on canvas.

He and his ministers say “dignity” about trans people and disabled people a lot, while treating us with utter disdain. How does his dictionary work?

Genetic material shed by tumors can be detected in the bloodstream three years before cancer diagnosis, according to a study led by investigators at Johns Hopkins University. That study was made possible with federal funding. Now, many studies like this are canceled. hub.jhu.edu/2025/06/04/...

leftists: that thing you teach us in school to be terrified of is happening historians: that thing is definitely happening star wars: here is a beat-for-beat breakdown of how the thing happens, but with pew pew lasers. we know you watched it news outlets: these protesters are out of control

I wonder if LLMs would have even taken off had Google not degraded search. For years they used questionable ranking metrics which rewarded SEO slop over useful content. It's not surprising fast but inaccurate information was more attractive than sifting through a 10,000 word essay to find a recipe.

Discworld QOTD, from Jingo “I'm not a natural killer! See this? See what it says? I'm supposed to keep the peace, I am! If I kill people to do it, I'm reading the wrong manual!”

JUST NO

I’ve never forgotten this picture from 2016 and how it completely reshaped my understanding of how the media covers protests.

In post soviet America, contest sings you.

Steven Universe sequel Lars of the Stars coming to Prime Video

Another US betrayal of allies. The Pentagon has launched a review of the AUKUS submarine deal with the UK and Australia, with suggestions it could be scrapped, the FT reports. The US says it needs all its nuclear subs for any conflict with China over Taiwan.

This is incredible

Head to Cochrane Street on a weekday lunchtime, and you'll stumble across quite the curio: a lively game of pigeon football. The top - and only - doo fitba manager in the city is Jim MacNee. @robbiejourno.bsky.social goes for an unexpectedly moving touchline chat.

It's such a shame this article is framed by the headline as being about screens, when actually its about the paucity of outdoor space for play, and lack of time within education settings to make the most of what little outdoor space there is. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Even when they’re the biggest losers in the UK, the money still flows to the Tories.

What happened when the U.S. forcibly sent 400,000 Mexican workers back to Mexico in the 1930s? The employment rate of native workers *went down* noticeably as a direct result. (You read that correctly) Why? Forced repatriation destroyed low-skill markets. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

This is a good thread on children's reading. Two things I've noticed that aren't mentioned. First is that parents continuing to read to older kids is still valuable in helping them access harder stories without having to do the work themselves, which is a stepping stone.

🚨BREAKING We've secured free school meals for thousands more high school students! Won through budget negotiations, this builds on our previous expansion to P4-5 pupils and ongoing expansion to P6-7. We'll continue to work towards every pupil receiving a free school meal.

I love Iceland

I find the Swedish take on veganism intriguing.

I love this diagram of the rank insignia of Greggs’ products

That's two billion bigger at an inflation rate of zero, 0 billion bigger at an annual inflation rate of 1%, and 2 billion less at an annual inflation rate of 2%.
