I’ve never forgotten this picture from 2016 and how it completely reshaped my understanding of how the media covers protests.

In post soviet America, contest sings you.

Steven Universe sequel Lars of the Stars coming to Prime Video

Another US betrayal of allies. The Pentagon has launched a review of the AUKUS submarine deal with the UK and Australia, with suggestions it could be scrapped, the FT reports. The US says it needs all its nuclear subs for any conflict with China over Taiwan.

This is incredible

Head to Cochrane Street on a weekday lunchtime, and you'll stumble across quite the curio: a lively game of pigeon football. The top - and only - doo fitba manager in the city is Jim MacNee. @robbiejourno.bsky.social goes for an unexpectedly moving touchline chat.

It's such a shame this article is framed by the headline as being about screens, when actually its about the paucity of outdoor space for play, and lack of time within education settings to make the most of what little outdoor space there is. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Even when they’re the biggest losers in the UK, the money still flows to the Tories.

What happened when the U.S. forcibly sent 400,000 Mexican workers back to Mexico in the 1930s? The employment rate of native workers *went down* noticeably as a direct result. (You read that correctly) Why? Forced repatriation destroyed low-skill markets. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

This is a good thread on children's reading. Two things I've noticed that aren't mentioned. First is that parents continuing to read to older kids is still valuable in helping them access harder stories without having to do the work themselves, which is a stepping stone.

🚨BREAKING We've secured free school meals for thousands more high school students! Won through budget negotiations, this builds on our previous expansion to P4-5 pupils and ongoing expansion to P6-7. We'll continue to work towards every pupil receiving a free school meal.

I love Iceland

I find the Swedish take on veganism intriguing.

I love this diagram of the rank insignia of Greggs’ products

That's two billion bigger at an inflation rate of zero, 0 billion bigger at an annual inflation rate of 1%, and 2 billion less at an annual inflation rate of 2%.

just remembered the time @zachweinersmith.bsky.social perfectly summed up what it feels like to work in cybersecurity

@scottishgreens.org have secured free school meals for thousands more children across the country 👏

More evidence, if needed.

Gutting America.

Having seen this cover briefly I have to assume the full title continues "...I Had Inadvertently Dressed Like Kermit The Frog".

The book proposal I'm currently working on is about a general theory of crises. So far my research is pointing toward the conclusion that the most important thing to do is to **understand that you are in a crisis** and that the normal rules which serve well in normal conditions may not apply.

I couldn't NOT do this.

This is where years of splitting hairs over what constitutes a peaceful protest has gotten us. So much ground has been conceded to bad faith actors that a single person throws a single brick, would have been enough for them to call in the military. It's the civility debate all over again.

Welcome to the archives.

I'm not sure that I have as yet seen anything come out of this 'AI' nonsense that Philip K Dick didn't warn us about.

Just to give you an idea of how dumb this is: if we doubled the speed of our fastest spacecraft, then doubled it again, it's still take 1,500 years to reach the nearest star. If we could travel at the fastest speed possible (which nothing with mass can) it'd take until 2030 to reach one star.

No new memes on Facebook this week, lads

Really interesting study. The Reform vote is fuelled by people who aren’t satisfied with their lives. Labour is ahead on people who are satisfied.

I asked the old punk how we will get through this, and he replied: we will get through this by taking care of each other. So I told the old punk that isn’t very specific, and he replied: taking care of each other isn’t about doing something specific, it’s about doing something.

My column this week: how if you want to understand the forces shaping politics, both at an electoral and ideological level, you have to understand videogames:
