I've got my gripes with Engels, but the concept of Social Murder is so incredibly useful for understanding the enforcement of gender; society does not have to explicitly put a gun to your head in order for it to kill you, it just has to put you in conditions which you cannot reasonably survive.

Any exclusion from ‘single sex spaces’ is exclusion from public life. The point of this is to make it functionally impossible to be trans and exist in society - you either transition and remove yourself from public life, or stay closeted to be able to leave your house. That’s the ultimate goal.
