He got back to camp around 6am

And both with very late (after 11:00) start times.

Only 2006 (new course in mud) and 2021 (US only field, post covid) saw worse results than this year's #BM100. The couple of course changes mustve been brutal. Can’t wait to find them 👀 thanks to @taka-does-stuff.bsky.social for the spreadsheet and to everyone that’s followed along and shared info

3rd Fewest loop2 finishes (4) 2nd Slowest 2 loop time for leader (24:32) Only the 3rd time since 2000 no runner started loop 4 (2006, 2021 were other years) John Kelly, the only 3 loop finisher now has the slowest, fastest fun run time, 10 minutes before cutoff(39:50). #BM100 (2/3)

Glad to be part of the journey, it was a shorter but albeit fun year for the Barkley. Now comes the waiting game for reports to trickle out, then I go to work figuring out what the course looked like in 2025

The last two years and 17-19 it wasn’t

yup 2/3rds is pretty close. Fire tower is at the peak marked with red.
comment in response to post
It’s very likely all the new course changes that have slowed them down will come after the fire tower on loop three. John and Tomo have plenty of time but nothing is guaranteed

The addition of more on marked trail to the course could also explain part of why Laz/Carl felt comfortable adding another climb to the course that was already near the peak of what runners could finish. Only 3 of the last 10 finishes were under 59:00. Anyway, thanks for reading my rambling. #BM100

first climb being moved back onto the Bird mtn trail switchbacks like it was for years. from the top of Bird mtn you could take a different line down to the valley to the north to maybe get up to 1800'. The previous first drop that has been in the course for 10+ years only goes down ~1250ft. (6/7)

to a marked park trail. The previous book 1 near the top of this off trail climb helped ensure that the runners stayed on the course and couldn't bypass this stretch with the marked park trails. Keith Dunn also said "this is the most marked course". My guess is that its a reference to... (5/7)

Speculation time. Books are placed to follow the general terrain of the course, and make sure the runners stay on track. I find it hard to believe book 1 was moved and the first climb from the last couple years was kept. The first climb and descent of the course run fairly parallel... (4/7)

A new climb was added called Ball-bearing hill, and last Year's addition of rusty spoon and fork were tweaked. Last year several runners said rusty spoon was the worst terrain of briars, blowdowns, and rocks on the course. It also involved a 1300' climb in 0.7 miles. #bm100 (3/7)

What we know for sure, most of these come from Jared Beasly's twitter posts. Book 1 was moved: in 2024 and assumedly the couple years before that, it was at the top of the first climb, now it is at the bottom of a 1800' descent that followed a 1500' climb. #bm100 (2/7)

Couldn’t find anything for 2021. Every race before 2017 was the traditional CCXX
comment in response to post
The traditional loop order hasnt been the norm for a few years. It’s been an even mix of CXCX and CXXC. Could be back to what you said though, we haven’t really gotten any word. All we know is loop 1 was CW
comment in response to post
That is also the direction I was leaning. If not that, probably CXXC. Apparently the CXCX actually made navigation a little easier. at least for some.

Any word of what direction loop 2 was? and same for loop 3 now? #bm100

I know of at least two spots the map changed. Just how drastic those changes were, not sure yet. I'll try to make a course speculation post later today.

2021 was the last time it happened. Jared Campbell and Luke Nelson were the only loop 3 finishers, both taking 39:04. The last time no one finished loop 3 was 2006. In 2015 (the previous latest start time) John Kelly and Jamil Coury were the only ones to start loop 4, but didn't finish.

Most likely a guess of how long it would take to travel to from the start, or they had someone on the course near it shoot a message to camp. Probably the first point
comment in response to post
I like the way you think. I'm more on the page of they just went from the peak of bird mountain straight north, running parallel to the NBT, because of the elevation difference. But yes will need to get some reports and hopefully a photo or two from in camp that has parts of a map.

Taka, you're a wizard with finding these flags, especially since no start video has been posted. Thanks! and great work

Course was definitely altered before book 1. It used to be at the top of a climb, now it’s after a climb and descent. Word from Jared Beasley is that the new descent drops 1800 feet, which is ~400 feet more than Checkmate hill (the previous first descent). #bm100

lucky you! Although I bet your legs weren't thinking that 😅 All parts of the BFC at some point right?

the lack of nicknames from Keith this year is disappointing. Maybe he hasn't given them from disappointment of their performance lol

Meatgrinder is 1700ft climbed in 1 mile. Little Hell is 1220ft climbed in 0.66 miles Testicle Spectacle had quite a few photographs (one attached) of it since it followed a powerline up the mountain. It was 650 feet climbed in 0.5miles
comment in response to post
Meatgrinder was added. Testicle spectacle, meth lab hill, and danger Dave’s wall were removed and replaced with the reintroduction of Little Hell. Only added about 800 feet of climbing per loop but made navigation harder and most runners now call meatgrinder the worst climb on the course. #bm100

Likely a less experienced field of runners. Course route probably changed a little in a couple spots, but not enough to justify the 90minute slower times. Mud from the past weekend’s storms could hurt too.

look out Dan Baglione, your futility record could be at stake. Only 22 hours left to tell 😅

I'm beginning to strongly suspect that the reason the sacrifice isn't back yet is because they are absolutely lost.

Thank you! sleuthing out the Barkley course and its changes is a fun cross between some type of murder mystery and putting together a puzzle. So fun to see it all come together.
