I highly recommend Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman and The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis, the latter of which tells the story of how Kahneman and his research partner and closest friend, Amos Tversky, came up with the idea of cognitive biases.

The "availability bias," which explains how people tend to believe to be true whatever arises most readily from memory, is one reason why repetition works. Say it enough, it will be the first thing that comes to someone's mind.

When someone remarked that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds, he or she had folks like this in mind. Staying on message is a moral failing if the message is as demonstrably, provably wrong as this is.

To be more invested in maintaining your own image as an “outsider” than the lives and wellbeing of the people it is your job to protect is a form of moral depravity beyond the scope of hubris and cruelty to describe. It’s way too easy to blame the brain worm. This man’s soul is diseased.
