An excellent frank 20 minute summary of the climatic mess we are in from David Sprat. #TellTheTruth

A whole new world of variation I innocently knew nothing about.

For the avoidance of doubt I whole heartedly agree with you that "I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something."

Julia, I asked Perplexity.AI how it felt about your position. It marshalls and presents plenty of evidence which supports my view that you should rethink your view. It is illuminating to view each of the 11 steps it took 'researching' the reply.

The heart of capitalism uncaring. It was useful to get us here but we need to evolve beyond its simplistic drives or perish.

The global media engine is funded by fossil fuel entities and its allies. They are deliberately driving us towards uncontrollable tipping points incompatible with our current global civilization and population, for short term profit. www.currentaffairs.org/news/its-out...

Maybe yes, maybe no.
I'm reminded of the Zen parable below.
This story teaches us not to label events as purely good or bad, as outcomes can change over time.

As a nation Finland is remarkably happy. It's education system might have played its part but lots of other factors must align too.
Equality of opportunity? Being under continual existential threat from the bear next door?
Cold, rain, snow, mosquitoes?

Since leaving formal education I have continued on as an autodidact. As such I am still in education. The where hardly matters, but today, online, with your help. #Socratic#Method

Weak minded people and parents? Poverty of ambition? Narcissistic, over confidence or laziness? The 'system'?
Whatever. We are the golden path for achieving our full individual or societal self-actualization. Yet I have a hope for a few.

I can't currently afford the time to cycle or walk to visit the Finns so I accept your word they are a good people.

As I read:
"Using low-grade sand, the device is charged up with heat made from cheap electricity from solar or wind."
I thought, why not go mad and use high grade sand?
The article is full of 'could' and not 'will be done everywhere, quickly', as the #ClimateCrisis urgently needs.

Living in an active earthquake zone that is also a well known firestorm zone (they do big floods too) is a risk that makes a lithium ion pack fire trivial.
I thought sand batteries were more a Texan thing, no? youtu.be/fzUs9DKJi70

I didn't just observe the Global sea ice extent being out of range but the Arctic sea ice (one component) is out of range too. This forebodes fu€¢wittery to come this year.

I had a few Mushroom Gummies recently (I've sort of lost track about how long ago it was) given to me by somebody. .... Why am I telling you this? ...
Anyway, I hunted for more in the garden. They won't stop laughing. Dunno why.

A logic bomb is a hidden thing or bit that lies dormant until triggered by say, time, an innocent predictable user action, or a condition being met (the logic bit). When triggered it wakes up and does harm (the bomb bit).
Some users are their own bad actor, by voting, for instance. ;-)

I want our youth to have this gift, as I and millions of others had. I also want back the gift of free movement that was taken from me going forward into my older age.
Such a tragic loss.

When I listen to a Trump appointee making assertions that have been debunked comprehensively many times as though he believes them (perhaps he does), that will destroy our civilisation, inside one lifetime (although not his), am left speechless.

I sense it might be time to start keeping a record of the number of days of record low global sea ice extents. Having even one record low day in my lifetime is extraordinary but quite a run is now in play, like I've seen before in ocean temperature. #TippingPoint

To be fair Gridserve, when available, have always worked too. Pity I so often find them full, at peak times.

Notably Putin has invaded 20% of Ukraine by area. The North Eastern US states I listed amount to less than 5% of the total U.S. land area. Could the USA just close it's eyes to such a small loss?
No, thought not. Then why expect Ukraine to do so for 4 times the area!!

Imaging Putin invaded Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania and 2 years later the EU opened negotiations with Russia, to end the war and didn't invite the USA? How would it go down? Yeah, right, thought so. ;-(

About half (50%) of Americans are below average intelligence. ;-)
Actually, when compared to Europeans, Chinese or Japanese, it's way over half of Americans who are below average intelligence.
Trump knows this. It's part of his play book.

Already X.ai are demonstrating Grok 3 (grok.com). It is still following the scaling laws that suggest the more training compute the better the resulting model (this now appears best in class).
Elon had built the biggest training computer and he's making it bigger! #AGI #ASI
