From a FOIA perspective, "the entire federal workforce should write down and email what they did last week" is extremely funny

"The program costs US taxpayers more than $20 million annually, and in return it protects a multibillion-dollar fishery from an eel-like invader that entered the Great Lakes on manmade shipping canals more than a century ago." Also mentions EPA layoffs, likely resulting in more pollution.

If you still have a local newspaper, write a letter to the editor on a current topic. You'll be surprised how often a good, short, timely letter will get accepted.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

NEW: The Trump administration has locked Minnesota out of $200 million in federal food and climate grants awarded last summer. Projects breaking ground this year were depending on that money. minnesotareformer.com/2025/02/21/t...

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

This is what obeying in advance looks like. The NSF fires 10% of its total staff in a move that went beyond what was requested by the current regime. The NSF is the flagship of US basic research infrastructure. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋 www.politico.com/news/2025/02...

Although the majority of people around the world are worried about climate change, most still feel it is a future issue or one that only affects the natural environment. They couldn’t be more wrong: climate change is already affecting what’s on our kitchen counter!

Climate change is the biggest crisis humanity faces in the 21st century and just because they are trying to eliminate all mentions of the word “climate“ doesn’t actually solve anything.

Tom Krause is in charge of both a sensitive government payment system and a company that has millions of dollars’ worth of active contracts with various federal agencies through distribution partners, a WIRED review finds. Conflicts posed by this are unprecedented in the modern era, experts say.

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

Side note. There are eight members of the joint chiefs. the chair is black. the CNO (navy) is a woman. the other six are white guys. chair and the cno got fired tonight.

Great article from @dventon.bsky.social on the impacts of federal layoffs on the wildland fire situation. Good discussion of how non-fire roles impact fire outcomes. Interesting that the Congressional Reps who serve the impacted areas have no comment. www.kqed.org/news/1202791...

Today's call to @liccardo.house.gov thanked him for joining the Rapid Response Task Force & Litigation Working Group & asked him to push back on ways Trump is refusing to restart funding. Ex: Not allowing NIH advisory council or study section mtgs to be posted in the federal register & firing staff

Of course, never do this. Explicitly avoid doing this, using this very diagram.

The underlying problem here is that US rooftop solar is something like 4x the cost in the rest of the world. I'd prefer to see incentives designed to fix that, rather than simply tossing the subsidy. Gift link www.sfchronicle.com/climate/arti...

Very basic question: DOGE is made up a few dozen people most of whom aren't drawing salaries. What could $40 million be going toward? Could it be data storage outside government servers? talkingpointsmemo.com/news/doge-co...

Also just now, NIH intranet was updated re its communications pause. NIH scientists can now resume travel to and participation in conferences. The pause on updating the Federal Register remains in place -- which means grant-making is effectively frozen, in violation of court orders.

This is a very bad idea. Cutting methane emissions is a key “emergency brake” to help stop climate change. Plus, it improves air quality and improves energy security and safety.

An idle high-voltage transmission line is suspected of sparking the deadly Eaton Fire near Los Angeles. As it turns out, California doesn't know how many more of these unused lines are strung up across the fire-prone state. A big risk hiding in plain sight. 🎁 www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

It's nearly 5am and Republicans just rammed through their pro-billionaire, anti-middle class budget blueprint. In order to pass massive tax giveaways for billionaires, they're going to defund Medicaid, slash veterans benefits, & force kids to go hungry. Make sure everyone knows it.
