I agree with this sentiment, but this is quite possibly the most misleading X-axis I’ve ever seen. Two buckets of 2 years. Two buckets of 5 years. Five buckets of 10 years. One catch all bucket.

The Greater Austin area permitted 45,000 new homes in 2022 while the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts permitted 17,000 new homes.

The weird thing is the second they get built, NIMBYs will claim you can't possibly replace them with small multifamily without ruining the character of the neighborhood

“The majority of respondents are supportive of allowing fourplexes in single-family-only zones, where they currently cannot be built: 69% of white residents, 52% of Black residents, and 54.4% of non-Black residents of color support fourplexes.” 🏘️ @ggwash.org ggwash.org/view/98531/p...

Thinking about how if every single blue-state city in America did this, the Republicans wouldn’t control the House and wouldn’t currently be gutting healthcare and empowering a fascist government. Housing is power.

Really incredible work by @ggwash.org here. Two things to highlight: 1) 63% of residents support allowing fourplexes everywhere in DC. 2) 63% of voters would be less likely to support a candidate that voted against more housing.

“Pedestrians are now twice as likely to be killed in D.C. as they were a decade ago, even as more local leaders promise safer streets. For the third consecutive year in 2024, the Washington region recorded more than 100 pedestrian deaths.” @jdharden.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

Going through old photos. Can anyone tell me what city the DOT destroyed here?

point access block reform + elevator reform enables a missing midrise revolution

that works out to $105k per home point access block... 7 stories. homes ranging from 1-3BRs. all homes w/ private outdoor space... most units are corner aspect. the american code official's mind can't comprehend this...

the median housing project in germany is a single stair 6-plex. you want more family sized homes? this is how you get there.

Auckland went all in on YIMBY, and the results are clear: 43,500 new homes in 10 years, and rents down 28% relative to peers. www.population.fyi/p/beyond-ske...

Plazas in Spain vs plazas in the US

Seville, Spain eliminated 5,000 car parking spaces and built an 80 km protected cycling network in just 18 months with 32 million €. Result: An average 70,000 bike trips a day. Leadership.

If you are in any position to get to DC on Tuesday, go to DC on Tuesday.

“For only the third time in records going back to 1990, rents in metro Denver declined year-over-year… The region added nearly 20,000 new apartments last year, about double the typical pace seen in recent years.” www.denverpost.com/2025/01/24/m...

HOUSING SUPPLY LOWERS RENTS

“When I was growing up, the Catholic Church always told me to have as many children as God would give me, so I had 5 kids in 6 years. And let me tell ya, that was the biggest crock of shit anyone has ever told me in my life” -my grandmother

This is in DC…yikes We really need to legalize single stair buildings.

reallocation of 2 lanes and a ridiculous amount of parking to space for people, space for bikes, one lane, and a little bit of parking this is what climate forward street transformations look like.

"All people want are single-family homes"

The only one with a spine. She has my vote forever.

It takes the Acela 6.75 hours to travel from Boston to DC, and in Japan this would take less than 3. This is arguably the most important economic center of the world, with trains as slow as 80 years ago. There’s no “golden age of America” with rail this slow.

thinking about the amount of open space in the 2nd phase of munich's freiham district compared to... any urban development underway in the US... www.hildundk.de/projekte/2r-...

The walkable main street Americans travel across the country to experience:

this is why i personally do not believe zoning was anything more than a preservation tool

One thing I love about living in Germany is that while the road designs are generally quite good (although not universally great like NL), the truly ubiquitous camera enforcement makes drivers extremely courteous towards cyclists and pedestrians. It’s so much calmer than in the US

“I see a difference, definitely,” said Tony, who has spent 18 years as a bus operator for the MTA. “There have been no delays the entire week, and when I look to my left and right down the avenues I can see all the way down – I’ve never seen it like that.” nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/01/10/m...

FREQUENCY

At today's State of the State address, CO Governor Jared Polis on stair reform: "Rather than force developers to build massive one-size-fits-all apartments that take up entire city blocks, let’s instead empower them to build apartments or homes that fit the neighborhood through smart stair reform."

It is important to recognize the anti-development vacancy arguments for what they are: a myth. There is simply no compelling evidence that a surplus of vacant homes exists, especially in high-cost cities. ggwash.org/view/97898/d...
