Massive congrats to @bambosmp.bsky.social for an excellent debate in Parliament just now on debt cancellation and to the drafters of the bill @kpatricio.bsky.social, Stephen Connelly and @celinetan.bsky.social Much more to be done, but justice is certainly around the corner. #CancelTheDebt

Brilliant to hear MP Emma Reynolds "supports expansion [of debt mechanisms] to middle income countries and automatic suspension of payments during negotiations"

FACT CHECK - this new debt justice law would NOT cost the UK tax payer. No idea where that came from but this law is specifically looking to compel private lenders to participate in debt initiatives like G20 framework. Read more here: debtjustice.org.uk/wp-content/u...

"Debt relief should be used as a strategic tool" No. Just really, No. Freedom is not a tool of the global north to use to 'develop' the global south. Debt has always been used as a tool of exploitation, debt cancellation should address this, not be seen as another way to wield a colonial tool.

"The case for debt cancellation is clear - it allows countries to be independent of oversees development. It has seen to reduce poverty, increase education opportunities... We support FULL DEBT CANCELLATION" - MP Monica Harding

Kenya spent more than 5 times on debt repayments than on climate protection. They are paying for a crisis they did not create. "[This bill] addresses the structural inequalities of colonialism, which have been instrumental in creating the debt that we are addressing today" - MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy

"We're facing the most acute debt crisis in history, spending more on debt servicing than providing vital public services... We are in a jubilee year - as said in the bible, let's be open hearted and give what is needed. Not generosity but JUSTICE" Wise and important words from MP Brian Mathew

Kicking off is @bambosmp.bsky.social on the success of our Jubilee 2000 Drop The Debt campaign. It was good, but not enough and now countries are in a similar situation again. Private creditors are making a profit from suffering. But millions of people are coming together to say #CancelTheDebt

90% of debt contracts used by the global south are rooted in UK law. So the UK could play a massive role in ending the debt crisis. This bill outlines why we need a new debt justice law to address the injustices faced by the global south. Here’s Karina’s thread on the bill bsky.app/profile/kpat...

This bill, which I co-drafted with my colleagues Stephen Connelly and Celine Tan in collaboration with @debtjustice.bsky.social, builds on the Debt Relief (Developing Countries) Act 2010, expanding its principles to limit recoverable debt to what a creditor would...
