“Reps are the ONLY antidote to being bad at something.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger, 19 May 2025 pump club newsletter

If Rational Arguments no longer work in US governance, it’s evidence of a deeper problem in our educational system, which favors what to know over how to think — how to critically analyze, process, & verify information. Seems like a bad time to reduce funding for Public Education.

Last Thursday, the conversation for removing i486 from the kernel suggests this will finally land with 6.15 having the removal, but that's a guess. There's been reports of Pentium being removed too. That's not accurate. Pentium "clone" support is being removed, not "early" Pentiums as claimed.

“People just cannot stop whining. They’ve tricked themselves into believing that whining about something is the same as doing something about it.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger, 14 April 2025, Pump Club newsletter

Martial arts are systems of defense. They need to be well rounded, teaching boxing, kicking, grappling, weapons, health. Grappling is done standing, but ground work is necessary to be able to stand back up. Emphasis comes in to play when considering how we can be attacked, and how we can walk away.

Unraveling a century or more of what we as a nation have built, and previous generations agreed upon, is not conservatism. It is radical anarchy.

The idea of a constitutional republic is following laws. The idea of democracy is everyone has a vote. A democratic republic votes for representatives, who have votes. Laws only work when followed and enforced, including by the enforcers and government, hence Lockean power balance/social contract.

Am I right reading that only one American car company will not be affected by Trump auto tariffs? Tesla? If that is true, Bernie’s claim to oligarchy has a data point. Please note in the comments verifiable references that show I’ve read this wrong.

I work from the command line enough that I missed that Mac Finder removed the capability to move files (discovered when a network drive denied access to terminal commands) other than with drag and drop. support.apple.com/en-us/102553 This lack of discoverability is a design flaw or arrogance.

“My job isn’t to be right; it’s to get it right.” — Arnold Schwarzenegger, 20 March 2025, Pump Club newsletter

I agree with Torvald’s suggestion to remove i486 from the kernel. To make a 2.6 kernel or better that will run on an actual i486 requires an actual i486, not a clone (those are P5 variants, including the 2007 Intel embedded chips), not virtualization. For those doing so up-to-date, I’m impressed.

"Only in mathematics will we find truth." — Tom Baker as the Doctor in The Deadly Assassin, Part 4

Leave me no choice. That would suggest no freedom. I think leave me no better alternative is what is intended. That’s a best choice from another point of view. Idiomatic contradiction is a curious phenomena, like literal as emphatic figurative.

Alas, science does it again, showing that other than as a socializing lubricant, alcohol is a poison. What a bummer.

Well, this is new. 3 minute commercials on Peacock, and the last 15-30 seconds end up being about 3 seconds per second in count down. Ads are now lying to you to show you a 10-15 second commercial but claim it’s only 5 seconds. Ad commercialism is out of control.

“…there was a time when conservatism meant fundamental honesty, cherishing historic values, fiscal responsibility, and caution about untested ventures….Now it seems to mean greed, arrogance, ignorance, religiosity, hypocrisy, and covert racism.” — Piers Anthony, May 2012 HiPiers newsletter

“…in school, [a] teacher said the reason he opposed the Communists was because they spread lies to achieve their purposes…. Now we have conservatives and Republicans doing the same. They should be similarly opposed until they mend their ways.” — Piers Anthony, April 2012 newsletter
