“We’re going to see people die as a result of this totally uncontrolled free fall they’re putting agencies into"

GLENN: Why don't you wear a suit? You're at the highest level in this country's office & you refuse to wear a suit. A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the office. ZELENSKYY: I will wear a costume after this war will finish. Maybe something like yours. Maybe something better.

It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up.

Local journalism is vital. Because only local editors understand why you cannot possibly be answering any emails until Wednesday. Happy Gras everybody 💜💚💛

new orleans boos the department of homeland security

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of Americans applying for jobless benefits last week jumps to 242,000, a three-month high.

I probably would have been writing a ton about Project 2025 in 2024 if it were not for the genocide. I'm sure that's true about a ton of the best policy researchers out there. The impact of Democratic Party-backed genocide comes through in a thousand different ways that are largely not measurable

Back from 11 days in Ukraine, with enormous thanks to the IWMF.

Unsettling news for us in Louisiana, where has been eyed for lots of carbon capture buildout. My reporting from 2023: theintercept.com/2023/08/24/c...

Great read, “The exec order authorized Landry to bulk up the presence of Louisiana State Police (LSP) within … New Orleans, and to “compel the evacuation of all or part of the population,”” I was in NOLA during the storm & seeing unhoused ppl in the cold is 100% better than this graffiti being true

“The data purge threatens to stymie efforts to protect some of the nation’s most polluted communities – including ones where Musk’s companies are located.“ www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

😬

“This is definitely a signal of a new era of how New Orleans in particular is going to be policed,” warned Stella Cziment, the Independent Police Monitor (IPM) for New Orleans. LSP have patrolled New Orleans before, said Cziment. “However, I can’t stress enough now: This is not the same.”

Very disturbing and potentially relevant for every Democratic-run city in a state governed by Republicans.

“In Landry’s “Enhanced Security Zone” on Bourbon Street, ice coolers were banned, and fanny packs were discouraged—but concealed firearms were still permitted.” boltsmag.org/louisiana-go...

NEW: The Louisiana governor for office clearly signaling he wanted to crack down on New Orleans. Now he keeps finding excuses to deploy state police in the city, citing temporary reasons that local critics warn are becoming permanent. Delaney Nolan reports for Bolts: boltsmag.org/louisiana-go...

Nothing to see here... Elimination of federal climate tools, some used to inquire in to Musk’s firms, sparks alarm www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Excellent reporting on the nascent New Orleans Tourism/Police State Zone. (Having State Police roam the city during Carnival is a very bad idea. This kind of thing is not their specialty.)

Bad Lieutenants (of the Governor): Port of Call New Orleans. Militarized economic police terrorize the most vulnerable by @delaneynolan.bsky.social

The new admin has taken down some climate data and webpages used in campaigns against Musk companies. My latest: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Brilliant protest. Yosemite National Park workers hung an upside-down American flag — traditionally a symbol of distress or a national threat — thousands of feet off the ground on the side of El Capitan.

I'm currently reporting from Kyiv, where tonight, from my hotel room, I could hear air defences forces shooting at drones. Can only imagine this will empower Putin to increase attacks

According to the Houston Chronicle, public health officials in Texas think that there are likely 200-300 people now infected with measles. If confirmed, this outbreak is already out of control. H/t to @mickiemo.bsky.social for the heads up. www.chron.com/news/houston...

So here is a phrase that will ring around in my brain until I set something on fire www.wsj.com/personal-fin...

In 3 days, the number of measles cases in a highly unvaccinated area of Texas has doubled. There are now 48 cases, all of whom are unvaccinated, and 13 of whom have been hospitalized so far, for a hospitalization rate of 27%. This is huge figure in epidemiology. This outbreak will keep spreading.

Today I'm filing two reported stories, and finalizing book edits, while on my way to a war zone, while keeping an eye on the apparent collapse of the US government. Chill chill chill

Ya got that right, @delaneynolan.bsky.social! "There is no actual “energy emergency”—at least not in the sense Trump means." www.sierraclub.org/sierra/trump...

Sorta kinda wanna lie down on the floor for a few days

@delaneynolan.bsky.social, who reported this story, points out that the $17.5 million spent on forcing these people into a freezing warehouse is the equivalent of *one year's rent* for 1,200 individuals. Unconscionable.

I can't believe Gayle Benson has seen Kendrick live and I haven't

President Trump believes boosting US oil production will lower prices for American consumers. However, much of that oil is sold overseas, leading to more competition and higher prices at home. www.sierraclub.org/sierra/trump...

Trump says expanding LNG exports will lower gas prices and enrich the US. The opposite is true. My latest for @sierramagazine.bsky.social : www.sierraclub.org/sierra/trump...

minneapolis made one of the shelters close for a week because it was in too close of proximity to the designated superbowl zone in 2018 having a superbowl hosted in your city is a goddamn curse on 90%+ of actual residents

In preparation for today’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, state police forced over 100 homeless men and women onto buses under threat of arrest, dumping them in an unheated warehouse. Tents destroyed, belongings lost. Press are barred from the warehouse. The price tag for this cruelty? $17.5 million

Woof. Some crazy numbers here from @halleparker.bsky.social at WWNO

"You believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality. That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality...We're history's actors, and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
