1941 Play Ball #14: Ted Williams. Too many baseball and non-baseball accolades to mention. The back of the card talks about how Ted’s 1940 season proved he was no flash in the pan.

IMO everyone should have the "6-pack". Doesn't have to be graded or HOF but 51-56 is a WAY different era and quality compared to 57-present

1941 Play Ball #13: Jimmie Foxx. XX was at the tail end of his career in 1940 and could only muster 36 HRs, 119 RBI, and a .993 OPS. In 20 seasons, Foxx was a nine time all-star, three time MVP, and triple crown winner in 1933. Enshrined in Cooperstown.

Happy Birthday, Honus!🎂 #CardSky I was just reminded that today is Honus' birthday. One of the 2 greatest Bucs of all time!💛🏴‍☠️🖤

1941 Play Ball #12: Jimmy Brown. Brown played eight seasons in the majors, primarily as a utility infielder for the Cardinals. He finished in the top six in MVP voting twice and was a one-time all-star. Jimmy joined the Air Force in 1943 and had a brief stint with the Pirates in 1946 after the war.

1941 Play Ball #11: Debs Garms. Garms played in the majors for 12 seasons. He played third base and outfield in a platoon role with the Pirates in 1940 and won the NL batting crown with just 385 plate appearances. He ended Johnny Vander Meer’s hitless streak in 1938.

1941 Play Ball #10: Arky Vaughan. Richard Nixon’s high school classmate played 14 seasons at shortstop for the Pirates and Dodgers. A nine time all-star, Arky led the NL in BA, OBP, and SLG in 1935. Tragically drowned when his fishing boat capsized at the age of 40.

I appreciate the Red Sox, Royals and Pirates recognizing the baseball fans on this site. Every other MLB team needs to pick it up.

1941 Play Ball #9: Pinky May. After tooling around the Yankees farm system for several years, Pinky played five seasons with the Phillies at third base. He was an all-star in 1940. He then joined the navy and did not play MLB after WWII. Long minor league managerial career. Father of Milt May.

1941 Play Ball #8: Mel Ott. 22 seasons with the Giants and an 11 time all-star. Hit 511 career HRs and led the league in homers six times. Mel had a .947 career OPS and is, of course, enshrined in Cooperstown.

1941 Play Ball #7: Harry Danning. Harry played catcher for ten seasons with the Giants. He was a four time all-star from 1938-1941. Hit .300 or better from 1938-1940 and was considered one of the best defensive catchers in the game. Joined the military after the 42 season and never played again.

Card(s) of the day.

1941 Play Ball #6: Carl Hubbell. King Carl was at the tail end of his HOF career in 1941, a career spanning 16 seasons and 9 all-star appearances with the Giants. Arguably the best pitcher in baseball over a 5 year stretch that saw him win over 20 games each year, 3 ERA titles and 2 MVP awards.

1941 Play Ball #5: “Buck” McCormick. Frank played for 13 seasons and was an eight time all-star. He led the league in hits three consecutive years and was the NL MVP in 1940, helping the Reds capture their first WS title against a team not trying to lose on purpose.

1941 Play Ball #4: “Duke” Derringer. Paul played 15 seasons and was a six time all-star. He won 20 games for the world champion Reds in 1940 and was the winning pitcher in game seven of the WS. A few years earlier, Derringer had a complete game victory in MLB’s first ever night game.

My old high school teacher is being released!

1941 Play Ball #3: Bucky Walters. Bucky pitched for 16 seasons and was a six time all-star. Fresh off his triple crown and MVP season in 1939, he led the league in wins again in 1940. Bucky had two complete game victories for the Reds in the 1940 WS, including a game six shutout.

1941 Play Ball #2: Max West. He played for seven seasons but didn’t really have much of a career after his three years of military service. Max was an all-star outfielder and first baseman in 1940 for the Boston Bees.

Super Bowl Sunday, which means baseball is right around the corner! I’m going to start flipping through my 1941 Play Ball set. Card #1 is Eddie Miller, shortstop for the Boston Braves. He played for 14 seasons and was a 7 time all-star. Led the league in doubles in 1947.
