Aurora on the front doorstep this evening... we're celebrating not changing our clocks in the Yukon tonight!

For years I’ve contrasted the way that US science allocates cognitive effort from the bottom up via individual scientists responding to career incentives with the way things were done in the Soviet Union, from the top down, by the Party setting rear b priorities. I can’t do that anymore.

Remembering a lot of people saying stuff like “I don’t agree with RFK Jr. on everything but at least he’s going to do something about the food that’s making us sick”

"The typical family headed by a college graduate enjoys over twice the income that a typical nongraduate does and over five times the wealth." The systematic attacks on higher education today aren't attacking "elitism" but are yet another way to redistribute wealth to billionaires. #oligarchy

Donna Haraway leading #StandUpForScience at #UCSC. Situating science in helping us live together in better ways. She's giving deets on cuts to science, incl #Indigenous science, ag, USAID, medicine, dangers to farm workers, dangers of data loss. Donna's a master at connecting all the relations. ❤️

This is the best thing I've read yet for making sense of what contemporary American Fascism looks like and for thinking about resistance. (via @kimtallbear.bsky.social)

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933. I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Amy Ray & adrienne maree brown. "this ecology of care has been generated and sustained in queer communities ... we take care of each other beyond the traditional concept of family." "mutability and mutualism ... how you adjust to the situation you’re in to survive ... how do you build community?"

"In these possibly last days... I will not tell you how many tons of carbon per acre the old and mature forests absorb," Rick Bass wrote in 2022. "Know that it is a lot. That data and science are out there." On the importance of our old growth forests as they face new attacks.

A dear feminist science studies mentor passed on March 5. Have a good journey Sandra Harding. ❤️ Harding was UCLA Distinguished Professor Emerita of Education and Gender Studies, former Director of the Center for the Study of Women. Link is an oral history interview with Sandra on her career.

There is an "opening for a different kind of Democrat: economically populist and willing to back Democratic positions the party is abandoning, and presents themselves as a fighter who will take on Trump and is fed up with a party too weak to stand up to him." jacobin.com/2025/03/demo...

In preparation for Stand Up for Science activities tomorrow ...

If you are in Montana and your rep voted against these bills, message and thank them. It’s one of the best things you can do.

Every college and university professor should memorize the third paragraph of this brilliant letter.

Looking forward to watching part of this with my Feminist Epistemology class in about an hour.

We love Amy Ray, and we love adrienne maree brown, so we invited them to sit down and have this amazing conversation about queer ecology, intersectional environmentalism, and much, much more for our Spring issue, QUEER PLANET. buff.ly/Q7Iuw38

@kilianjoerg.bsky.social & I on why the right loves to be against moralizing while also moralizing a lot, and whether on the left we might want to take up a stance in which we together say what we think is good and right. theconversation.com/how-rebellio...

First good piece I've read on this VERY serious subject. Make no mistake about it, the Trump administration is trying to destroy higher education.

ProPublica looked into science grants that Ted Cruz's team flagged as "radical" and "neo-Marxist" and, uh. This would be good comedy if it didn't matter so much www.propublica.org/article/ted-...

Christians, the people who colonized this territory by intentionally spreading deadly viruses to people living here, are now hosting parties to intentionally spread deadly viruses to themselves.

Binge-watched all of season 4 of Van Der Valk (PBS) tonight. Love all of the Dutch scenery. The characters and storylines are pretty good too.

Over a million federal workers refused to comply with Musk’s email ultimatum last week, offering a glimpse of what mass noncooperation can look like.

NEW: “Kennedy paused a multimillion dollar project to create a new Covid-19 vaccine in pill form on Tuesday, and the Food and Drug Administration canceled an advisory committee meeting on updating next season’s flu vaccine.” newrepublic.com/post/192059/...

Tomorrow is my last day on Meta platforms. I'll be deleting (not just deactivating) those accounts. This book provided good insights. Happy to be here on Bluesky. Algorithmic choice and lack of advertising are key. We'll see how the business model unfolds when the venture capital funding is gone.

Just want to add that "restoring" a program or team or mission is like glueing the fragments together after you broke something. It's not as though it didn't happen, as though you didn't damage it (and in this case, the glue has not been supplied or applied).

This is a phenomenal and informative thread. Please read and share.

Proposed bill in Sweden would require Signal/WhatsApp to store messages users send through the apps and provide a backdoor to gov/law enforcement to read the encrypted comms. Signal head @meredithmeredith.bsky.social says Signal will halt service for users in Sweden if this becomes a requirement

Interesting. I grew up in the CRC, though I left at age 18 and never looked back.

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:

The most achingly beautiful explanation of what science is, from @edyong209.bsky.social: “the idea that much of the world is hidden from us, that we don’t perceive it and don’t understand it, and that it is worth understanding and it is necessary to understand.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Remarkable thread offering guidance to current and prospective NSF grantees about how to navigate the times ahead — from an NSF program officer who was fired in yesterday's DOGE purge (!)
